Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV) and Altura Communication Solutions todayannounced the availability of a specialized version of the newAvaya Communication Manager software. This version of CommunicationManager, which is available only through Altura, will includeinteroperability capabilities designed for Altura's enterprisecustomers, enabling them to easily evolve from traditionaltelephone networks to Internet Protocol (IP) telephony systems andapplications.

Avaya Communication Manager is the new version of Avaya'sflagship IP telephony software and is part of the integrated suiteof Avaya MultiVantage™ Communications Applications.

The interoperability capabilities included with AvayaCommunication Manager enable Altura's enterprise customers tocapitalize on their investment in existing Fujitsu 9600 networksand take advantage of Avaya's MultiVantage CommunicationsApplications. Avaya's integrated suite gives businesses access to asingle applications portfolio that extends Avaya's IP telephony, contact center, messaging and unified communications softwareacross an array of business operations and employee functions.

By transitioning to Avaya's MultiVantage CommunicationsApplications suite, Altura's business customers can implement IPtelephony to adapt to evolving enterprise requirements such asincreasing employee mobility, raising the quality of customerservice and providing workers with access to key headquarters-basedfunctions from any location. Using the suite's applications, enterprises can meet these requirements and accomplish their goalsin a more cost-effective, IP environment.

"Our interoperability capabilities pave the way for Fujitsuusers to migrate to state-of-the-art voice over IP technology andother advanced applications without giving up their existingdigital and analog phones," says Bob Blazek, Altura's chiefexecutive officer. "And they can move to the new technology attheir own pace, according to their own budgets and in sync withtheir own corporate initiatives. We think that flexibility is justas attractive as the investment protection provided by the newsoftware."

"One of Avaya's key differentiators is its ability tointeroperate with other vendors, particularly with existingnetworks, such as those running on Fujitsu systems," said MickyTsui, vice president and general manager for Avaya's ConvergedSystems pision. "As a result, Avaya can provide the U.S.- basedFujitsu client base with IP telephony solutions in a manner that iscost-effective, practical and evolutionary, enabling theseenterprises to leverage their existing network infrastructure."

The new capabilities allow the Fujitsu 9600 platform tointegrate with the Avaya Communication Manager telephony software,Avaya Media Servers and Avaya Media Gateways. Altura supports morethan 6,000 Fujitsu communication systems in the United States andwill continue to do so while offering its customers the opportunityto migrate to IP telephony and other advanced applications withAvaya.

The interoperability capabilities were successfully beta testedat multiple customer locations, including Oakland CommunityCollege, Oakland, Calif., which has been an Altura customer forthree years. "We selected Altura's interoperability software withthe Avaya IP telephony solution to enhance our existing F9600communication platform. We are able to extend the life of ournetwork and add IP-enabled Avaya applications that mesh with ourexisting PBX network. We expect the new software to provide us withimproved efficiencies," says Andy Hillberry, Oakland CommunityCollege chief information officer.

The development of the interoperability capabilities included inAvaya Communication Manager concludes a comprehensive effort byAltura to identify a new, next-generation convergence platform forits clients after Fujitsu exited the U.S. enterprise market about18 months ago.

IP telephony enables voice and data collaboration over aconverged IP — or packet-based — network. IP telephony can helpcompanies reduce costs and enhance productivity through greatermobility and next generation converged applications. With IPtelephony, key workplace tools, such as voice mail, email, faxesand contact databases, all can be accessed and managed from anydevice, such as a personal digital assistant or laptop.

Altura and Avaya began developing the new capabilities embeddedin the Altura version of Avaya Communication Manager after enteringinto a technology, sales and service agreement in August of 2002.Altura is also a certified Avaya Business Partner.
