Avaya Connects Ireland for 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games

The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which are takingplace outside the USA for the first time ever, will host athleteswith learning disabilities from 160 countries worldwide. Thecommunications infrastructure for the Games will utilise theAvaya's SYSTIMAX® SCS cabling which will support the criticalsystem applications required for the efficient running of the eventincluding: the Games Management System, the Medical ManagementSystem, and the Main Press Centre.

The SYSTIMAX SCS cabling infrastructure will support The MedicalManagement System that holds athletes' medical records. Due to thenature of the event, access to medical records at all times isvital. The SYSTIMAX PowerSUM copper solution provides an advanced,technically proven, reliable and easily installed copper cablingnetwork, whilst the SYSTIMAX OptiSPEED and LazrSPEED fibre cablingsolution, ensures network reliability with one of the fastesttransmission speeds over the extended distances (required by thesporting venues) of any fibre cable in the world.

The SYSTIMAX SCS solution will also support the Games ManagementSystem, a vital application that will run over a local areanetwork, processing participants and event data, to producecontestant lists for each pision. In addition, the solution willhost the Volunteer Management System which will control themovements of over 30,000 volunteers as well as supporting the MainPress Centre based in the Royal Dublin Society, which will give the1,500 expected global media representatives, instant access to theInternet.

Avaya has been worked closely with Authorised SYSTIMAXBusinessPartner, Kedington to install the cabling solutioninto existing sporting venues situated in the Dublin region withNortel core switches running Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-SX in theBackbone over OptiSPEED and LazrSPEED fibre links. Fast Ethernet100BASE-TX will connect workstation PCs to the switches and theinfrastructure will support voice and data applications.
