Avaya Connects Ireland for the 2003 Special Olympics World SummerGames


Avaya Inc. Avaya will cable the 20 sporting venues in the greaterDublin region for what is the biggest, global multi-sports event ofthe year.

Avaya will cable the 20sporting venues in the greater Dublin region for what is thebiggest, global multi-sports event of the year.

Avaya's SYSTIMAX® Structured Connectivity Solution (SCS) will beused to underpin the network to support and manage the 7,000athletes, 30,000 volunteers and 1,500 media representativesexpected to attend the event.

The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which will takeplace outside the USA for the first time ever, will host athleteswith learning disabilities from 160 countries worldwide. Thecommunications infrastructure for the games will utilise Avaya'sSYSTIMAX SCS to support the critical system applications requiredfor the efficient running of the event. These include the GamesManagement System, the Medical Management System, the VolunteerManagement System and the Media Centre.

Avaya's SYSTIMAX SCS cabling infrastructure will support theMedical Management System holding athletes' medical records. Due tothe nature of the event, access to medical records at all times isvital. Avaya's SYSTIMAX PowerSUM™ copper solution provides anadvanced, technically proven, reliable and easily installed coppercabling network. Avaya's SYSTIMAX OptiSPEED™ and LazrSPEED® fibrecabling solution, ensures reliability with 99.999% network up timedelivering one of the fastest transmission speeds over the extendeddistances (required by the sporting venues) of any fibre cable inthe world.

The SYSTIMAX SCS solution will also support the Games ManagementSystem, a key application that will run over a local area network,processing participants and event data, to produce contestant listsfor each heat. In addition, the solution will host the VolunteerManagement System that will control the movements of over 30,000volunteers as well as support the Media Centre based in the RoyalDublin Society. This will provide the 1,500 expected global mediarepresentatives with instant access to the Internet.

Avaya is working with its Authorised SYSTIMAX BusinessPartner,Kedington Ltd. to install the cabling solution into existingsporting venues situated in the Dublin region with the event's coreswitches running Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-SX in the Backbone overAvaya OptiSPEED and LazrSPEED fibre links. Fast Ethernet 100BASE-TXwill connect workstation PCs to the switches and the infrastructurewill support voice and data applications.
