Avaya Converged Solutions Score for New Cologne Stadium Network inPreparation for 2006 FIFA World Cup™ Germany

(NYSE:AV), a leading global provider ofcommunications networks and services for businesses, and anofficial partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, today announced thatAvaya voice and data converged infrastructure and applications arebeing installed at the Cologne stadium (RheinEnergie Stadion) inGermany. The deal was completed in partnership with DeutscheTelekom T-Com, and the Avaya system is being provided to thecustomer by Deutsche Telecom subsidiary and Avaya SilverBusinessPartner, Deutsche Telekom Network, Projects &Services GmbH. The stadium is one of the 12 venues for the nextFIFA World Cup™ being held in Germany in 2006.

The decision to install a converged communications network usingAvaya equipment was driven by two main factors: the need to haveinfrastructure in place that can easily be upgraded to cope with aglobal sporting event in 2006; and the fact that Avaya equipmentwill be used for FIFA communications in all participating stadiumsaround the FIFA World Cup™. An existing Avaya network at Colognewill make the installation process prior to the FIFA World Cup™much easier.

Upon completion of the installation, which is scheduled for theend of 2003, Cologne stadium staff will use the new InternetProtocol-based network to manage internal and external day-to-daycommunications. The new infrastructure will be easily expanded toaccommodate up to a potential 8,000 trunks and 36,000 extensions tocope with peak time communications around FIFA World Cup™ matches,an eightfold increase in the number of ports normally required fora football stadium.

  • The equipment installed at the stadium includes Avaya™Communication Manager software powering seven Avaya™ S8700 serversand Avaya™ G600 gateways, and seven Avaya™ P882 Backbone and P33XWorkgroup switches, enabling voice and data communications to runon the same network.
  • During the 2002 FIFA World Cup™, Avaya's network provided voiceand data services for groups such as the media, the 32 final teamsand every stadium across two countries. This included 120,000connections and 40,000 endpoints among 20 stadiums.
  • As part of its FIFA World Cup™, sponsorship responsibilities,Avaya will be visiting the German stadiums involved in hosting thetournament in order to assess whether their communicationscapabilities are sufficient.
