Avaya (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communicationsnetworks and services for businesses, today announced that it ishelping Columbia University reduce costs and improve the emergencycommunication capabilities of two satellite offices in New YorkCity.

Avaya IP Office Solutions are now supporting more than 180 usersin university offices at 142nd Street and 125th Street in Harlem. The two locations house the offices of a few Mailman School ofPublic Health programs, including the School's National Center forChildren in Poverty, Center for Global Health and EconomicDevelopment, Harlem Health Promotion Center and Head Startprogram.

The Avaya IP Office solutions at each of the two sites will belinked to the main Columbia campus by both traditionalpoint-to-point and Internet telephony circuits — functioning aspart of a university-wide network. They also will operateindependently, allowing important calls to get through during anemergency, even if the university network is compromised.

"As we expand beyond our main campus, we don't want oursatellite locations to feel isolated," said Ricardo Tunon, assistant telecommunications manager for Columbia. "So integratingour communication systems is important. But we also need a solutionthat will support us in a potential disaster situation. If our mainnetwork is down, Avaya IP Office can operate stand-alone and giveus more than one way to complete a call."

Sold to Columbia and installed by EnhancedCommunications, an Avaya BusinessPartner, Avaya IP Office is ahigh-performance telephony and data server designed specificallyfor small and mid-sized businesses and for branch offices of largerorganizations. Built on Avaya's latest advancements in convergedvoice and data technology, Avaya IP Office can operate as anInternet protocol (IP) or circuit-switched PBX and can supportintegrated contact centers and a host of other communicationapplications.

IP Office is helping Columbia reduce costs in a number of ways.It can operate on the existing telephony or data infrastructureavailable in each of the two buildings, eliminating the need forcostly rewiring. A compact footprint allows IP Office to berack-mounted in a closet, eliminating the need to reconfigurespace. Easy programming significantly reduces the time required forinstallation and service. Built-in conferencing capabilities letthem set up calls on the fly for up to 64 participants, eliminatingthe need for an outside conferencing service.

Even the University's internal moves and changes are lesscostly. Employees simply take their telephone along when they moveto a new office and plug it in. Phone numbers and preferencesautomatically follow.
