Avaya (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of communicationsnetworks and services for businesses, today announced the launch ofits new flexible working HR policy which has been extended to offerall 900 employees in the UK the opportunity to request flexibleworking. The policy has been designed to aid better jobsatisfaction, allowing employees to adapt work around familycommitments. Avaya believes the new policy will contribute togreater productivity and is calling on other businesses, both largeand small, to offer flexible working to benefit theirorganisations. The company has developed a 'Flexible WorkingIdentikit' to help employees and line managers assesssuitability for flexible working.

Avaya is pre-empting and meeting the requirements of the newFlexible Working (Procedural Requirements) Regulations 2002 thatwill come into effect from 6th April 2003. The new legislationmakes employers legally responsible to consider applications fromparents to work flexibly. The legislation applies to parents withchildren under the age of six, and of disabled children under theage of 18.

Avaya recognises that flexible working will aid better jobsatisfaction by allowing employees to work around familycommitments and boost productivity of workers by allowing them workschedules that suit them. Two examples of Avaya flexible workersare:

  • James Masters, development support engineer — James works forAvaya three days a week and has a flexible schedule that allows himto drop off his sons at nursery and begin work at 10.30am and endat 7.00pm. For the remainder of the week, James uses Avaya'sunified communication technology so that he can be contacted ifneeded in an emergency.

  • Audrey Campbell, Services Implementation manager, EMEA — Audreyworks solely from her home office in Bedfordshire when she is notvisiting customer sites and Avaya offices across Europe. Thisenables her to avoid travelling four hours each day. Also, by usingAvaya's communications technology Audrey is able to work asproductively from home as she would in the Guildford office.

Audrey Campbell comments: ⬓I manage a team of 120 across Europeand when I am not travelling in countries such as France andGermany being able to work from home means I avoid a lengthycommute to the office. I work productively from home by accessingto the corporate network securely and contacting my colleaguesusing Avaya's phone conferencing system.⬝

Mike Young, HR Director for Avaya across the UK, Ireland and theNordics comments: ⬓Both businesses and employees can benefit fromflexible working. However, to make it work successfully it needs tobe undertaken in an environment of trust with an agreed structureand framework. Organisations need to move on from the '80smentality where managers felt employees weren't working if theycouldn't see them.⬝

Avaya and other companies can increase efficiency through aflexible working policy.

  • Cost savings — Globally, Avaya saves an estimated£690,000 in reduced telecommunications costs per year by usingvirtual private networks (VPNs) for flexible working.

Avaya's flexible working trial undertaken in 2002 found that costsavings from using Avaya's virtual private network technology couldbe over £3,500 per mobile worker per year.

  • Increased productivity — According to the Social MarketFoundation remote working can increase employee productivity by30%.

  • Remote working reduces travel time for employees, reducing their stress levels and lessening impact on theenvironment.

Avaya is rolling out its new flexible working policy duringMarch and April with an internal communications programme toemployees and line managers. The policy will be communicated viathe company intranet and through workshops for line managers.
