Avaya Showcases Secure Converged Communications for HigherEducation

At EDUCAUSE 2003 in Anaheim, Calif., Avaya Inc. At EDUCAUSE 2003 in Anaheim, Calif., Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), aleading global provider of communications networks and services forbusinesses, governmental and educational institutions, will depicta colorful college landscape, including an administration building,dorm, classroom and an emergency/disaster recovery site that employAvaya's converged voice and data solutions.

The solutions use IP telephony, wireless, unified communication,contact centers, security and services solutions to help delivercost-effective, productivity-enhancing communications to studentsand faculty on today's college campuses. Also included aresolutions that enable educational institutions to meet regulatoryobligations for providing comprehensive communications access toinpiduals with disabilities.

EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advancehigher education by promoting the use of information technology,will hold its conference Nov. 4–7 at the Anaheim Convention Centerin Anaheim, Calif.

Featured at the show will be Avaya's accessibility solutionsthat enable communications for those with disabilities. Solutionssuch as Avaya's Modular Messaging, and IP Office VoiceMail Pro helpschools meet equal access regulations and help the hearing impairedto enjoy the same voice messaging capabilities and alerts of avoice touch-tone phone in conjunction with their using the texttelephone devices such as a TTY. Advanced solutions such as theAvaya Unified Communication Center's Speech Access Solution allowthe visually impaired to use their voice to manage communications.Speech Access users may listen to their email, have access to theirschedule and place conference calls by issuing simple voicecommands.

To meet today's security and disaster preparedness concerns inhigher education, Avaya will showcase the Avaya MobileCommunications Network Solution, which provides temporary secure,wireless voice and data needs around a campus. The solutionfeatures wireless IP soft phones and wired hard phones that can bequickly setup for triage centers or other situations to helpinstitutions meet the needs of temporary offices and special eventssuch as career fairs.

Several Avaya DeveloperConnection Program members will be onhand at the booth to demonstrate their solutions and explain howcolleges and universities can benefit from the ability to accessinformation from any device and the possibilities of receivingadditional revenue generated with advertising on the screens ofcommunications devices such as Avaya's IP phones. The AvayaDeveloperConnection Program provides marketing and sales support,development tools and system compliance testing for independentsoftware developers and third-party infrastructure vendors thatoffer integrated solutions for Avaya enterprise network systems andapplications.

Avaya Global Services will feature its comprehensive portfolioof protection services that will design and assess a network tominimize risks and maximize security and up-time operations.

A few recent customer educational wins at Avaya include:

  • The University of South Florida, the nation's 12th largestresearch university, upgraded its network with the latest inconverged Internet Protocol (IP) technology from Avaya to enhancethe delivery of services to its nearly 40,000 students at severalregional campuses.
  • Avaya IP Office solutions enable Columbia University to reducecosts and improve the emergency communication capabilities of twosatellite offices in New York. The sites are linked to the maincampus by both traditional point-to-point and Internet telephonycircuits — functioning as part of a university-wide network. Theyalso will operate independently, allowing important calls to getthrough during an emergency, even if the university's network iscompromised. The solutions' built-in conferencing capabilities alsolet the university set up calls on the fly for up to 64participants, eliminating the need for an outside conferencingservice.
  • Buena Vista University, voted by U.S. News and WorldReport as one of America's best colleges, has seen return onits investment and productivity. Equipped with a campus-widewireless data network from Avaya, the Iowa-based school hasimplemented the Avaya Communication Manager IP Telephonyapplication running on an Avaya S8700 Media Server to reduce costs,further expand student/faculty collaboration and extend the usefullife of its existing older equipment. The schools' latest use ofthe Avaya Modular Messaging solution adds productivity to thecampus by allowing the integration of voice messaging ande-mail.
  • The University College of Engineering and Technology Malaysia(KUKTEM) in Kuantan, Malaysia, was the first to receive a fullyconverged Avaya 10GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) network in Southeast Asia.The university's converged infrastructure is supported by the 10GbEand wireless LAN, to IP Telephony and contact center applicationsin a move toward being a paperless university. The Avaya 10GbEnetwork provides the huge bandwidth needed to power the paperlessenvironment whereby books, lecture notes and examinations are allonline.
  • Students at Morehouse College, the nation's largest privateliberal arts college for men and one of the leading institutionsfocused on the education of African-Americans, have the latestconverged voice and data solutions from Avaya to help them learnthe "nuts and bolts" of communications in their newtelecommunications program.
