Avaya Inc. a leading global provider of voice and data networksto businesses and the market leader in structured cabling systemsworldwide, today announced that it has been awarded additionalcontracts to design and install the cabling infrastructure forGuangzhou's New Baiyun International Airport's IT network. The newairport is scheduled to open in June next year.

In July, last year, the airport selected Avaya SYSTIMAX®Structured Connectivity Solution (SCS) for the main terminalbuilding's telecommunications cable network.

The additional cable network will link together the ChinaSouthern Airline (CSA) Group Headquarters Complex, GuangzhouAircraft Maintenance Engineering Co Ltd (GAMECO), South-CentralRegion Aviation Authority, and Guangzhou Customs and ImmigrationBureau.

Avaya's leading edge technology, SYSTIMAX Category 6 structuredconnectivity solutions, will be deployed in field and officeapplications at the airport complex. Up to 42,000 copperinformation outlets and 20,000 LC connections will be installed inmore than 30 buildings.

The US$2.3 billion airport, located in south China, is primed tobe the country's third aviation hub after Beijing and Shanghai. When operational, it will be able to service 25 million passengersannually and have a cargo handling capacity of 1 million tons — or70% of the entire Pearl River Delta's annual cargo volume.

The Director of the Low Voltage Department of Guangzhou BaiyunAirport Project Management Centre, Mr. Cui Zihui, said:"Telecommunications requirements for an airport of this size aredemanding and mission-critical, with no room for error. Aftercareful consideration and consultation, we concluded that Avaya hasthe necessary experience and expertise in network design, maintenance and technical support services that we need. Followingthe main terminal project, we are happy to continue ourcollaboration with Avaya to cable the other airport facilities aswell."

In order to fulfill transmission rate and bandwidthrequirements, an integrated solution of copper, single- andmulti-mode optic fiber systems, will be installed. Data, voice andvideo applications will be supported by Avaya's advanced GigaSPEED®XL7 and XL8 copper series, giving desktop systems the bestavailable copper system with less downtime and more throughput thanever before and performance that far exceeds existing Category 6specifications. Ultra-high flame retardant cables will be used toprovide critical fire-resistant capability.

The Baiyun Airport is the first airport in China to include inits infrastructure design Category 6 cabling with Avaya SYSTIMAXGigaSPEED XL solution, a back-bone cable with Gigabit capacity, fire heat resistant cabling and a full intelligent buildingmanagement system.

Both LazrSPEED®-150 and LazrSPEED-300 will be used in thein-building backbone for the premises, offering efficientapplications coverage from 10 Kb/s to 10 Gb/s, and allowing foreasy migration to Gigabit Ethernet in the future. The OptiSPEED™solution, using single-mode and multi-mode optical fiber, will bedeployed in the campus backbone subsystem that interconnects allthe buildings and the airport telecommunications center.

Mr. Cui added: "Like all large building complexes, how tomaximize transmission efficiency and minimize risks over such avast area, and at the same time maintain flexibility, scalabilityand management accessibility is a big challenge. Avaya's SYSTIMAXsolutions, with their high strength and high quality cablingdesign, consistent electronic performance, expert installations, and thorough follow-up services and guarantees, have a provenrecord of success."

Construction of the airport is on schedule and will be completedby the end of 2003, when the cabling network is expected to beready for final testing. An over-night moving in operation isplanned for June 2004.
