Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced the successful installation of its wireless LAN (WLAN) solution at the Strand Hilton Hotel in Helsinki; the base of FIFA operations for the FIFA U-17 World Championship 2003 starting today in Finland.

The installation of Avaya's WLAN will transform the hotel into the FIFA headquarters for the event, with some 80 FIFA staff to use the network for up to 17 hours per day. The deadline for installation was August 4, 2003  two weeks before the tournament commenced. The first match takes place today and culminates with the final on August 30. Once the tournament ends, the network will be disassembled and re-used for other FIFA events including the upcoming FIFA World Youth Championship to be played in the United Arab Emirates in November/December 2003.

Avaya is currently an Official FIFA Partner through the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and the FIFA U-17 World Championship in Finland is part of Avaya's partnership with FIFA.

Michael Kelly, Head of the FIFA IT Solution at FIFA, said: "We needed state-of-the-art network infrastructure for the event, but we could not afford for it to take weeks to install and remove from the venue. After the success of the 2002 FIFA World Cup using many Avaya products including the company's wireless products, Avaya's WLAN seemed the perfect solution for all parties."

Doug Gardner, World Cup Project Director at Avaya, said: "Wireless networks are by far the most efficient way to set up a robust network for one-off events such as the FIFA U-17 World Championship. They are flexible as well as scalable, and at the end of the tournament can be quickly dismantled leaving the hotel or any other venue fully in tact."

Avaya is also currently working around-the-clock in preparation for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003, to be hosted by the United States next month, providing voice and data infrastructure and services for the tournament. With the change in host country for the Women's World Cup in late May, Avaya Global Services is designing, building and managing networks for six stadiums and FIFA's U.S. headquarters under substantially tight timeframes.
