Avaya to Upgrade HCT's Abu Dhabi Men's College's Wireless Networkto New 802.11a Standard

This will give students faster, more convenientaccess to the internet and extensive e-learning applications,deployed by the college over the last 12 months. The implementationwill be managed by Avaya Authorised BusinessPartner,Omnix.

The initial phase of Avaya's Wireless solution, implemented overthree years ago, gave some 1,200 Abu Dhabi Men's College students'access to the Internet and other internal applications over awireless local area network (WLAN).

In the second phase upgrade, Avaya's AP-3 Wireless Access Pointswill be installed, as well as new 54 Mb cards to networkedcomputers, allowing the college to deliver 54mbs data transferrates. Avaya's Wireless solution also enables migration tonext-generation converged networks, without the need to replaceexisting infrastructure. A simple software upgrade will permit thesystem to be operational at the new transfer rate.

"ADMC was one of the earliest adopters of wireless technologyfor educational purposes in the region and this upgrade willprovide an increase in network speed to allow ADMC to offer morelearning flexibility to its students," said Dr. Tayeb Kamali,Vice-Chancellor and Director of Abu Dhabi Men's College. "Thisaligns with the college's vision of providing state-of-the-artinfrastructure for its students to keep abreast of currenttechnologies.

"By upgrading its wireless infrastructure, the college will beable to offer more in the way of e-learning and e-classes. Forexample, students will gain easy access to e-libraries, videoconferencing, on-line courses, web-based classes, course materialsand much more, from anywhere on campus."

According to Dr. Kamali, Abu Dhabi Men's College is the onlycampus facility in the Middle East to offer over 24 courseson-line.

"The upgrade will also allow students to make maximum usage ofavailable bandwidth through wireless access on laptops, which arebecoming mandatory learning tools at ADMC."

Avaya's Wireless infrastructure was selected due to its abilityto meet all the college's current requirements, whilst leavingscope for future expansion. It will also allow the college to entera converged environment at a later date that best suits its needs.The operability and functionality of convergence will add VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) applications and IP telephony,changing the possible learning and teaching dynamics at thecollege.

"The existing wireless network at Abu Dhabi Men's Collegecurrently runs 802.11b over 11Mb," said Serjios El-Hage, director,Middle East, North Africa and South East Europe. "Avaya's wirelessAP-3 access points will enable the college to make a seamlesstransition to the new 802.11a standard running over 54 Mb. Thisbroader bandwidth works for both student and college alike,allowing more students access to higher rates of data transfer andmore bandwidth for the college's improved applications."
