Avaya's Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Solutions Named "Best inTest" by Business Communications Review

Avaya (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communicationsnetworks and services for businesses, today announced that its IPtelephony solutions — Enterprise Class Internet Protocol Solutions(ECLIPS) powered by Avaya MultiVantage™ Software — were ranked"Best-in-Test" among large-scale IP-PBXs in a January report fromBusiness Communications Review (BCR) magazine (www.bcr.com), the premier magazinefor enterprise telecom and network managers and ITprofessionals.

The evaluation was conducted for BCR magazine by Miercom, anindependent networking consultancy and product test center locatedin Princeton Junction, N.J. In the testing, the Avaya IP Telephonysolution — composed of the Avaya™ S8700 Media Server and G600 MediaGateway — was measured against four competing IP-PBX systems thatsupport 1,000 or more station clients. The report ranked basic andadvanced features, management and performance/availability, findingthat Avaya outperformed the competition in advanced features, andscored well in every other category, leading to the magazine's"Best-in-Test" Award.

To evaluate advanced features, Miercom tested a wide range ofcapabilities, with a focus on applications that enhancedproductivity and were easy to use. The Avaya applications, devicesand capabilities that were tested for this category included:

  • The Avaya 4630 IP Screenphone: The authors stated thatthe 4630 was the first color screenphone they've seen, and was "themost dramatic example of phone-to-PC morphing." The Avaya 4630 —which is geared toward use in kiosks and other areas that enablepublic use — features an innovative touch-screen that lets usersaccess HTML pages using their fingers or a stylus.
  • Avaya IP Softphone for Pocket PC: This software-basedfeature allows handheld device users to make and receive phonecalls and control their IP desk phones remotely. According to thereport, this feature demonstrated the ability to carryconversations with "remarkably clear voice quality," and its valuein managing the features of one's station/desktop phone washighlighted as well.
  • Media encryption to protect active IP phone calls. While"packet sniffing" tools make IP-based phone calls vulnerable tohackers, the BCR report noted that with Avaya media encryption,only white noise is heard if packets are captured and replayed.Quality media encryption is important in helping to keepinformation protected and secure.

"Miercom's test results — andthe Best-in-Test award from BCR — are a result of Avaya'scommitment to providing businesses with innovative IP telephonyapplications, systems, phones and client interfaces that reflectthe needs of demanding enterprises."

In its report, Miercom also added that across the board, vendorssuch as Avaya who have deep experience in traditionalcommunications are now overcoming newer IP PBX vendors on qualityfeatures.

According to the authors, "In what could amount to an arms raceof sorts, traditional PBX vendors are showing increasingly broadvarieties of home-grown, end-point hardware and software, whiletheir VoIP-only counterparts are lagging behind them."

Avaya's excellence in IP Telephony solutions went beyondadvanced features to other categories measured, includingmanagement, performance and availability. For example, in the areaof management, Avaya Site Administration — which enables easiermanagement for network administrators — was cited as a "slight cutabove its colleagues from the TDM world." In the availabilitycategory, the redundancy capabilities of Avaya's S8700 MediaServers were singled out as "the most innovative single feature ofany kind under review." A key availability feature that impressedreviewers included Avaya's convenient and seamless support foroff-net call server backup.
