Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider ofcommunications networks and services for businesses, todayannounced the College of New Caledonia (CNC), which offers one ofthe most technologically advanced lab college centres in theCanadian College system, has upgraded its campus network with Avayaconverged infrastructure solutions1.

The installation of the new converged infrastructure switches atCNC, based in British Columbia, will increase bandwidth at thedesktop level from 10 to 100 megabytes. This will accommodatesoftware such as Auto CAD® and ArcInfo® that is required forprograms such as Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems(GIS) Technology and Engineering Design.

The upgrades will provide the speed and bandwidth required fordelivery of robust data applications across the campus environment. In addition, network management will be simplified with theimplementation of Avaya VisAbility™ Management Suite.

"We were seeing a lot of demand and strain on the bandwidth andneeded to give the students the confidence they needed to depend onthe technology," said Steven Shelley, Manager of Computer Services."The consequent Avaya upgrades to the backbone and the completecommunications network resulted in higher throughput and stabilitythroughout the entire college."

In addition to deploying Avaya's converged infrastructuresolutions, CNC has also implemented Avaya VisAbility ManagementSuite, which allows users to manage complex network infrastructures— including both voice and data communications — through a commonWeb-based user interface. Previously, CNC system administratorswere bound to a single console station to manage the system — asituation that was less than ideal when servicing college campusesspanning 117,500 square kilometres across British Columbia. Now,with the Avaya VisAbility Management software, administrators canaccess and manage information from remote locations, even changingsystem parameters from off-site, improving network uptime, increasing staff productivity and reducing operating costs.

"For a small college as remote as CNC, we depend on a smallinternal staff and need to be able to manage our networks ourselveswith little service disruption." adds Shelley. "The Avaya solutionsenable the necessary stability and network management capabilitieswithout requiring additional support to maintain our communicationssystem."

The upgraded network, supplied by Avaya Business Partner,Dynavar Networking, includes the Avaya™ P580 MultiService Switch asthe campus backbone to provide the necessary bandwidth andswitching and routing capabilities. The Avaya™ P333T switches, partof the Avaya™ P330 Stackable Switching Family, are used foraggregating wiring closets in which the Avaya™ P130 WorkgroupSwitch and Avaya™ P120 switches are deployed. Subsequent upgradesto the peripherals of the network at each campus will continuegradually over the next year.

"In today's competitive educational environment, it's importantfor the College of New Caledonia to be able to offer its studentsthe most robust networks to support their educationalrequirements," said Patrick Lance, Vice President of Marketing ofAvaya Canada. "As the College's network demands grow, the Avayaconverged infrastructure solutions offer the scalability thatallows for easy expansion and upgrades."
