Avaya Inc. The ability to connect remote workers out on the road was animportant consideration in choosing IP telephony. Novell's largesales and consultant workforce will benefit from Avaya's Softphonesolution, which allows employees to make and receive calls viatheir laptop, regardless of where they connect to the network.

Moving to a greenfields location also provided an idealopportunity for the company to upgrade its telephony and datanetworks, and investigate new technologies like IP telephony.

"Moving to a brand new site really gave us an opportunity toconsider the benefits that IP telephony offers. Novell has a longassociation with Avaya and its depth of experience and reliabilityover the years was one of the key factors in our decision to choosean Avaya IP telephony solution," said Sam Gennaoui, CIO atNovell.

"The Avaya solution dovetailed with our business requirements ona number of levels and will allow us to deploy and leverage a newIP infrastructure to help improve staff productivity and simplifynetwork administration," Gennaoui said.

The company's internal auto provisioning system utilising theNovell DirXML solution automatically enables a new employee email, file access, directory entry and allows access to the required lineof business applications. With the introduction of IP telephony, anew employee's entry in the phone system is created automaticallyand a new number is allocated from a pre-assigned list.

Novell chose to work with NSC Group on the implementation as thecompany's expertise working alongside Avaya on large scale IPtelephony projects could not be matched in the local market.

"It is very gratifying to have NSC's experience recognised by anorganisation of Novell's calibre because it shows how mature andsophisticated our capabilities have become," said Craig Neil,Managing Director of NSC Group.

Novell's converged voice and data solution includes Avaya'sS8700 Media Servers with Avaya Communication Manager on a convergedAvaya data switching network, IP Hardphones and Avaya Softphones, all managed through the Avaya Integrated Management Suite. Novell'sexisting Avaya AP-3 wireless LAN solution will be integrated withthe IP telephony solution to provide increased flexibility andallow workers to hot desk and access data wirelessly wherever theyare in the Novell office.
