The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the trade associationrepresenting consumer electronics companies and sponsor of thelargest consumer electronics tradeshow in the world, is using anAvaya communication solution to dramatically reduce itstelecommunication costs and improve the productivity of its staff.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the tradeassociation representing consumer electronics companies and sponsorof the largest consumer electronics tradeshow in the world, isusing an Avaya communication solution to dramatically reduce itstelecommunication costs and improve the productivity of itsstaff.

Sold and integrated by Telecommunication ConceptsInc., an authorized Avaya BusinessPartner, the Avayasolution gives one of the world's largest promoters of technologyits own state-of-the-art communication network. CEA is sponsor ofthe International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the industry'skey annual event that draws more than 110,000 attendees and 2,300exhibitors to Las Vegas, Nevada each year and generates 85% of theassociation's revenue.

"Our members and our show exhibitors are the companies definingtechnological innovation," said Dan Deignan, CEA's chief financialofficer. "It makes us big fans of technology, and we want to stayon the cutting-edge ourselves."

The Avaya solution for CEA replaced a PBX-based voice system theassociation shared with other tenants of the Arlington, Va., officebuilding where it is based. The new Avaya network gives CEA its ownresources — from a single packet-based Internet protocol (IP)infrastructure for voice and data to industry-leading call centerand unified messaging applications.

Specific components of the solution include:

  • Avaya MultiVantage™ Communication Applicationsto provide CEA with a reliable and scalable platform for itscommunications applications.
  • Avaya™ G700 Media Gateways and S8300 MediaServers to give CEA a flexible, scalable foundation fordelivering the telephony applications economically and reliablyover its own data network.
  • Avaya™ Contact Center Software to allow CEA tomanage incoming calls, faxes and email messages more efficiently byrouting them to the staff member best able to handle them.Self-service features are available to callers through anauto-attendant capability.
  • Avaya Unified Messenger® for Microsoft®Exchange to integrate voicemail and email in a singleinbox and give CEA staffers the ability to access messages viaphone or PC.
  • Avaya 4620 IP Telephones for each CEA staffer, featuring a large-screen graphic display, Web browser and fullduplex speakerphone.
  • Avaya IP Softphones to allow CEA's remote andmobile workers to make and receive phone calls over a simplegraphical user display on their PC or laptop computer.

Dramatically lower costs and improvedproductivity
Deignan estimates that the Avaya solution will quickly pay foritself through costs savings alone, including the elimination of$170,000 CEA paid each year to service and support its formershared system.

Deignan said the organization is also benefiting from simplersystems administration, and is able to manage its own moves, addsand changes without the expense of an outside contractor.

The Avaya solution also is improving productivity for CEA's 150staffers.

"I estimate that on average everyone on our team is saving fiveto 20 minutes per day by being able to manage their voice messageson their computer monitor and to respond to them in priorityorder," he said.

In addition, the secure remote access features of the networkhave been a big plus for CEA, enabling its staff to remainefficient when away from the office.

"The ability to access phone messages from wherever you are is abig plus," Deignan said. "We had more snow in D.C. this year thanwe⬢ve had in a decade, but our staff was able to work from home, access email and voice mail at the same time and hardly miss abeat." In addition, CEA staffers on the road use PDAs to accessboth voice and email messages or use the text-to-speech function ofthe Avaya network to have their email read to them over their cellphone.
