Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV) a leading global provider of communicationsnetworks and services for businesses, today announced that WesternPlains Zoo has implemented an Avaya Wireless LAN network to improvemobility and access to information for staff over its 788 hectaregrounds.

Western Plains Zoo, governed by the Zoological Parks Board ofNSW, and located in Dubbo, has selected the Avaya wireless solutionto increase staff access to resources and information from remoteareas in its site. Specifically, the solution will provide remotenetwork access to support the requirements for its upcoming pointof sale (POS) system at the remote Kiosk and Zoofari Lodgelocations.

"We were looking for a way to connect all the facilities of theZoo without having to damage the many enclosures and habitats,"said John Inkson, Systems Administrator for the Board. "Thesolution needed to support the new POS system, be adaptable tofuture needs and cause minimum disruption to the running of thezoo. A wireless solution was the answer."

The Avaya wireless LAN, which has been implemented by AvayaBusiness Partner ComputerCorp, includes an Avaya AP3 Access Pointlocated in the administration building and Avaya Central OutdoorRouter Bundles with Gold Card (COR) installed in seven locationsaround the Zoo.

ComputerCorp designed and implemented a solar powered system onthe giraffe shed roof to provide power to the Avaya COR and antennathere, as the shed is without electricity.

"The zoo's ambition is ultimately to be able to offer guests andschool groups the opportunity to use a laptop or handheld devicelinked to our network," Inkson said. "This would allow access tokeeper talks and up–to–date information about exhibits whiletraveling around the Zoo. I am confident this solution will lead usinto the future."

Western Plains Zoo is looking at ways to extend the functions ofthe Avaya wireless LAN solution from its current focus of meetingrequirements for its new POS system and staff mobility to includevisitor access, educational tools and wireless IP telephony in thefuture.
