Avaya Exhibits at EDUCAUSE the Value for Higher Education Organizations to Tap Into the Power of Internet Protocol Telephony Communications

10-13-2004
  • Company to demonstrate solutions that adapt to changing circumstances, improve student and staff productivity, increase communications mobility and cost efficiencies

The basics of communications for higher education institutions have become increasingly complicated as officials deal with adapting to constantly changing environments of fluctuating enrollments, increasing communication demands and budget restraints. Colleges are faced with trying to find ways for utilizing new technologies such as Internet Protocol (IP) telephony that allows enhanced communications on and off campus and gives greater value to the delivery of an education.

At the EDUCAUSE conference in booth #1102 (Oct. 19-22) in Denver, Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, will offer answers to help make solving these issues easier and explain how colleges can save money, increase flexibility in communications and provide faculty, staff and students with leading-edge, always accessible communications-including for those who have disabilities. The company will also include a demonstration of how colleges can be prepared for emergencies and keep their communications networks always intact.

EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Avaya will showcase its communications solutions in the Colorado Convention Center, where subject matter experts will be on hand to explain Internet Protocol telephony communications applications for today's college campuses. For example, Avaya will showcase its messaging solution using emerging technologies that include IP telephony. IP telephony is software-based technology that uses Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) to transmit voice as data over a computer network. Colleges and businesses are adopting this rapidly emerging technology — which includes features such as call forwarding, conferencing, voice messaging and other applications — to enhance the capability of their communication network and reduce costs. With IP telephony, a variety of new capabilities can be integrated into a communications network. For instance, a new communications protocol — Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) — a technology that enables people to more easily connect immediately with each other across multiple points of contact — can facilitate communications and businesses processes that enable staff and students to communicate with each other and conduct school business, no matter what kind of device they have or where they are. Avaya is the market leader for IP telephony solutions globally.1

The Avaya booth demonstrations will be constructed under the following themes:

  • Mobility Solutions for Faculty, Staff and Students
  • Converged, Connected, Safe and Secure Campus Networks
  • Business/Campus Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Special Events.

Demonstrations will include these highlights for converged communications:

  • Converged voice and data solutions that will help colleges campuses connect more cost effectively with various departments and research facilities both on-campus and off-campus.
  • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) will help faculty, staff and students communicate with each other and not be hindered by the kind of device they have or where they are. For highly collaborative research and distance education applications, SIP provides the ability to establish a framework for integrated voice, video and data collaboration.
  • Mobility and unified communications solutions that can keep traveling and remote faculty connected to the campus networks more efficiently will be demonstrated, including the capability of speaking to your e-mail to perform various tasks from anywhere and managing your calendar and contacts with your voice.

"Many universities operate in a very complex environment where the stakes are high as they must keep pace in offering their students and faculty the best in communications that will enhance their learning environments and keep them competitive with other schools," said Robert Bluemer, North America director, State and Local Government and Education Markets, Avaya. "Avaya has a commitment to helping educational institutions by closely listening to their business challenges and developing innovative technology solutions that help them provide adaptable and technically advanced environments for students to excel."

Avaya is a new corporate member of Internet2 (I2), a consortium being led by 206 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.
