Avaya Leads IP Telephony Market in Mexico with Largest Number of Enterprise Port Shipments in 2003

  • IP Telephony considered a critical application to help businesses reduce costs; The increasing adoption of this technology by Mexican companies and the leading market share in 4Q '03 pushes Avaya to the top spot for the year in IP Port shipments.

Avaya announced that the company achieved market leadership in the total number of enterprise IP Telephony port shipments in Mexico with a 36 percent share in 2003, as reported by industry analyst firm IDC.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced that the company achieved market leadership in the total number of enterprise IP Telephony port shipments in Mexico with a 36 percent share in 2003, as reported by industry analyst firm IDC.

According to the recently published report from IDC entitled "Latin America Enterprise Networks," Avaya was the leading supplier of IP Telephony ports in Mexico last year (each port represents a network-user workstation). Avaya also tops the list of providers of this type of business application.

IP telephony is software-based technology that uses Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) to transmit voice as data over a computer network. Businesses in Mexico are adopting this rapidly emerging technology - which includes features such as call forwarding, conferencing, voice messaging and other applications - to enhance the capability of their communication network and reduce costs.

According to the market analysis firm, Avaya shipped 36 percent of the IP Telephony ports in Mexico during 2003, an eight percent increase over its closest competitor.

"IP Telephony is a critical application for businesses looking to reduce costs and lower risks and improve overall operations. The adoption of this technology is still in its initial stages, with around two or three percent of more than 400 million business telephone ports globally IP-enabled. We believe Avaya is well-positioned to succeed in this growing market," said Laurent Pruvost, managing director of Avaya Mexico. "Our strategy offers businesses the benefit of choosing between an all-IP network, or a mixed solution combining IP and traditional telephony. This empowers companies to make more flexible decisions when migrating to IP and allows them to continue gaining value from current investments," he added.

Avaya enables enterprises to choose a communications roadmap that supports their business needs, and offers one of the industry's most comprehensive portfolios of solutions and services for IP telephony - Avaya MultiVantage™ Communications Applications - including new Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-enabled multimedia communications applications. The portfolio brings together Avaya applications in telephony, contact centers, messaging and unified communication, and features the new version of the company's flagship IP telephony software, Avaya Communication Manager.

"The results of a study we conducted in 2003 show that there is a growing adoption of IP Telephony by businesses in Mexico. We estimate that this technology will grow an estimated 20% per year through 2008, and the performance of Avaya in this area shows the company's capacity to take advantage of this growing market," said Rica Levy Dray, director of telecom research for IDC Latin America.

The complete IDC report, titled: "Latin America Enterprise Networks", covers the enterprise voice communications market, and provides market share for Voice over IP (VoIP) and enterprise telephony ports, including both IP telephony and TDM.
