Avaya Leads World Market in Enterprise IP Telephony Port Shipmentsfor 2003

  • Leading market share in 4Q '03 pushes Avaya to the top spot for the year in IP Port Shipments and significantly increases IP Revenue market share

Avaya Inc. announced it achieved global market leadership for Enterprise Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Ports shipped, with 22.4 percent of the market in 2003 as reported in a recent study by industry analyst firm Synergy Research Group.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced it achieved global market leadership for Enterprise Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Ports shipped, with 22.4 percent of the market in 2003 as reported in a recent study by industry analyst firm Synergy Research Group.

According to the report, Avaya supplied 26.3 percent of the enterprise IP telephony ports shipped worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2003, beating the nearest competitor by more than eight percentage points. This strong performance in the quarter fueled Avaya's market-leading finish for the year in IP telephony port shipments.

The report also named Avaya the leader in Enterprise IP Telephony Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2003, completing the year in the number-two overall position with 22.2 percent year-end market share, representing a 12.8 percentage point increase over 2002. By comparison, the top competitor lost 13.9 percentage points in enterprise IP telephony revenue market share during the same 12-month period, according to the report.

"While IP telephony is still in the early stages of adoption - we estimate that approximately two to three percent of more than 400 million telephony ports in use by business today are IP-enabled - we believe Avaya is well-positioned to succeed in this growing market," said Donald Peterson, chairman and CEO of Avaya. "Our strategy offers businesses the benefit of choice in pursuing an all-IP network or a mixed solution combining IP and traditional telephony. This empowers companies to make more flexible decisions when migrating to IP while continuing to gain value from current investments."

Avaya enables enterprises to choose a communications roadmap that supports their business needs, and offers one of the industry's most comprehensive portfolios of solutions and services for IP telephony - Avaya MultiVantage Communications Applications - including new Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-enabled multimedia communications applications announced today. The portfolio brings together Avaya's applications in telephony, contact centers, messaging and unified communication, and features the new version of the company's flagship IP telephony software, Avaya Communication Manager. With the suite, businesses have access to a single portfolio of standards-based applications that extends Avaya's IP telephony software across enterprise operations and employee functions.

"The fourth quarter results for 2003 support a growing trend toward the adoption of enterprise IP telephony that we saw throughout the year," said Jeremy Duke, president, Synergy Research Group, Inc. "Overall yearly growth clocked in at an impressive 90 percent and Avaya's performance shows they were able to take advantage of this burgeoning market."
