  • Synergy report shows Avaya continuing world leadership established in 2003

Avaya announced it has extended its global market leadership in Enterprise Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Revenue and Enterprise IP Telephony Ports shipped during the second quarter of 2004.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced it has extended its global market leadership in Enterprise Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Revenue and Enterprise IP Telephony Ports shipped during the second quarter of 2004, as reported in a recent study by industry analyst firm Synergy Research Group.

The report, written by industry analysts Jeremy Duke and Ray Mota, shows Avaya with 24.2 percent market share in enterprise IP ports shipped during the second quarter of 2004; Avaya is also named the leader in worldwide Enterprise IP Telephony Revenue, with 24.0percent share of this growing market. According to the report, "In Q2 2004, Enterprise IP telephony sales increased 14 percent sequentially, driven by Enterprise Voice networks migrating to next generation IP Telephony. The first half of 2004 posted 61 percent growth over the same period in 2003."

"Avaya's approach to IP telephony allows businesses to migrate to a converged architecture with their existing infrastructure as well as give the option to their customers of when and where to deploy IP Telephony," said Jeremy Duke, president, Synergy Research Group. "It's clearly resonating with Avaya's installed base and with new customers, fortifying the rapid adoption of Enterprise IP Telephony worldwide."

IP telephony is software-based technology that uses Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) to transmit voice as data over a computer network. Businesses are adopting this rapidly emerging technology - which includes features such as call forwarding, conferencing, voice messaging and other applications - to enhance the capability of their communication network and reduce costs.

"IP telephony is increasing momentum as customers recognize the benefits of converged voice and data applications," said Donald Peterson, chairman and CEO of Avaya. "Integrating communications with technologies such as wireless and multi-media messaging can help workers respond more quickly to customers, from the office or on the road. Tighter integration with business processes will help companies address customer requirements even faster, by providing automated cues to resolve urgent business situations, such as unexpected supply chain issues or account discrepancies."

Avaya offers one of the industry's most comprehensive portfolios of solutions for IP telephony - Avaya MultiVantage® Communications Applications - with a flexible architecture that enables enterprises to design a communications roadmap that supports their business needs. Supported by Avaya Global Services and a network of authorized Avaya BusinessPartners, the portfolio brings together Avaya's applications in telephony, contact centers, messaging and unified communication, and features Avaya Communication Manager, the company's flagship IP telephony software. With the suite, businesses have access to a single portfolio of standards-based applications that extends Avaya's IP telephony software across enterprise operations and employee functions.

The full Synergy report, entitled "Q2 2004 Enterprise Telephony Market Shares," covers the worldwide enterprise voice market, providing market share data for Enterprise VoIP Gateways and Enterprise Telephony - covering both IP and time pision multiplexing (TDM) telephony. Market share for IP telephony is given in terms of ports and revenues for LAN telephony, Converged Telephony and IP Phones. The data in this announcement was drawn from revenue and port data for worldwide enterprise IP telephony as a whole.
