Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization Service Increases NetworkCapacity and Transmission Speeds

  • Software-based managed service can more than double network transmission speeds without the need for capital investment

Avaya announced Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization, an offering that can create more capacity on a company's communications network and more than double data transmission speeds without investing in hardware-based bandwidth compression systems or network upgrades.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization, an offering from Avaya Global Services that can create more capacity on a company's communications network and more than double data transmission speeds without investing in hardware-based bandwidth compression systems or network upgrades.

The software-based service manages information and data traffic, enabling workers to download data and access the Internet more quickly, regardless of whether they access the corporate network in the office or over a dial-up modem. In addition, Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization can help facilitate migration to next-generation applications such as Internet Protocol (IP) telephony, which uses a single converged network to manage voice and data traffic and functions, by creating more network capacity.

Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization provides software for PCs, gateways and servers to enable compression, caching, performance-oriented configuration, firewall protection and redundancy services. The software significantly reduces Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) traffic, which governs the transmission of text and images over the Internet, in addition to streamlining traffic from other common data application protocols, including File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and e-mail protocols. Compressing these protocols results in faster Web page loading and e-mail delivery using popular enterprise packages such as IBM® Lotus Domino® and Microsoft® Exchange.

The Seattle Times, an Avaya IP telephony customer, is one of the first businesses to test the benefits of Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization. In solution trials, The Seattle Times increased data transmission speeds by two and a half times.

"Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization has the potential to create instant improvements in network traffic," said Thomas Dunkerley, IT communications chief for The Seattle Times. "Our tests showed more than 50 percent reduction in HTTP traffic over both the LAN and WAN."

The Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization solution is based on patent-pending technology from Artera Group, Inc., a subsidiary of NCT Group, Inc. Working with Avaya Labs, Artera developed its core software technology into an enterprise application for local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Network Bandwidth Optimization is available for a monthly, per user fee, enabling flexible deployment across hundreds or thousands of endpoints. As a remote managed service, the solution can be easily expanded, even across multi-site enterprises, without the administrative costs or logistics of managing the servers and gateways internally.

"Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization helps companies extend the capacity of existing networks while creating application headroom for running IP telephony and other advanced applications," said Mehrdad Nadooshan, chief technology officer, Avaya Global Services. "Users experience faster access to information, network managers see improvement in overall network performance, and CFOs realize significant savings in IT investment."

Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization is part of a suite of Avaya services that help companies successfully plan, design, implement and manage IP communications networks. Avaya Business Communications Consulting is the cornerstone of the planning process, helping companies evaluate business objectives, develop technology roadmaps and plan for implementation of secure, reliable IP networks. Avaya ExpertNet IP Assessment Tools, which provide network assessment data to help companies prepare for IP telephony, and Avaya EXPERT SystemsSM Diagnostic Tools, monitoring and diagnostic tools that use artificial intelligence to support remote resolution of system alarms, are part of a full complement of maintenance, management and support services for IP networking.

"As part of Avaya's commitment to provide products and services designed to enable companies to leverage and optimize the value and performance of current investments while migrating to IP telephony, Avaya Network Bandwidth Optimization offers companies several advantages," said Christine Tenneson, program manager with industry analyst firm IDC. "With Avaya's Network Bandwidth Optimization subscription service, congested networks can expand bandwidth flexibly without the budgeting hurdle of capital investment."
