Since the introduction of its flagship IP telephony product for small and medium businesses two years ago, Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, has sold more than 35,000 Avaya IP Office systems to enterprises worldwide. Avaya IP Office provides independently owned businesses — with single and multiple locations — and branch offices of large companies with an "all-in-one" system for voice and data communications, messaging, customer service management and more.

Customers around the globe, including Livart Korea, one of the top furniture producers in the country, and Capco, a technology provider for the financial services industry, are using IP Office, Avaya's flagship IP telephony solution designed especially for small and medium businesses, to enhance customer service and improve the productivity of its employees.

Now, with new software (3.0) for IP Office, Avaya has made the system even more attractive for these businesses, while also continuing to meet Avaya BusinessPartner needs for a reliable, cost-efficient system that is easy to install.

"Small and medium businesses worldwide need to keep their levels of productivity and customer service extremely high in order to remain competitive," said Patricia Hume, group vice-president for Avaya's Small and Medium Business Solutions (SMBS) group. "They are recognising that a converged system, which brings together all their communications needs, and enables them to use IP telephony at their own pace and path, is a valuable business tool they can use to achieve those goals."

IP telephony is software-based technology that uses the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to transmit voice over a data network. Businesses of all sizes are adopting this rapidly emerging technology — which includes features such as call forwarding, conferencing, voice messaging and other applications — to enhance the capability of their communications network and reduce costs.

"IP telephony will grow quickly in small and medium businesses over the next five years" said Matthew Ball, Research Analyst for Canalys. "They demand the same high-level of functionality in their PBXs as enterprises, but are currently constrained by the perceived complexity and costs of deployment. IP Office's all-in-one approach allows businesses to deploy IP telephony and switch on the right applications, at their own pace. This license based approach benefits the end user."

Also, according to The Yankee Group, more than half of small and medium businesses that plan to upgrade their phone systems plan to consider converged solutions.*

The features and capabilities Avaya has added to its flagship converged solution for small and medium businesses takes the performance of IP Office to an even higher level, according to Saied Seghatoleslami, vice-president and general manager for Avaya's SMBS Group. "We are also making it easier than ever for our community of 2,500 Avaya certified business partners to install and maintain IP Office for their customers, which is a key element in bringing the benefits of IP Office to the market," he said.

Commenting on the new software, "We're excited about the new applications that the IP Office 3.0 software allows us to recommend to our customers, helping them to improve their business efficiency and customer service," said Steve Walker, pisional director at Azzurri, an Avaya-Platinum certified BusinessPartner. "We have already received considerable interest in this new product and this new software release makes an already world class product even better."

With the new software on IP Office:

  • Mobile phone users can record calls when it's not possible to take notes, and use their laptop as a phone;
  • The system works as a "key system," with telephone lines illuminated on the phone sets for a visual display of a line in use, making it simpler for more people in an office to see incoming calls and provide coverage;
  • System setup and upgrades are faster and easier, with more installation tools available; (See accompanying backgrounder for additional details.)

Avaya adds distributors to bring solutions to market; builds "best of breed" portfolio through strategic relationships
Avaya has continued to add new distribution channels worldwide to sell solutions to small and medium firms, including Louis Poulsen Kommunikation, one of the largest distributors in the Nordics, which is distributing Avaya IP Office in Denmark. Lars Donnesborg, sales manager, Louis Poulsen Kommunikation, said: "The addition of Avaya IP Office is an ideal supplement to our portfolio. Now, we can offer both existing and new resellers a wide range of IP telephony solutions along with new CTI applications in the segment for two to 500 users."

Also, Avaya is working with Nimans, a distributor for IP Office in the UK, and a company with established links with over 3,000 resellers that support the communication needs of organisations with less than 50 users, which is a key growth area for sales of IP Office; and with Ingram Micro in China, a global IT distributor, with operations in China and 100 countries around the world.

To deliver the business solutions that small and medium customers need, Avaya is working with world class leaders in their respective areas of expertise, and has formed strategic relationships with companies such as Microsoft and HP. Avaya has an agreement with Microsoft, enabling Avaya to license Microsoft® Business Solutions CRM (Microsoft CRM) and develop an "all in one" application suite by embedding it with the Avaya IP Office portfolio. The agreement commits the two organisations to co-marketing and joint lead generation activities to build profitable channels for both Microsoft and Avaya by enabling both companies to sell the embedded solution. Avaya and HP have a small and medium business-focused relationship that dedicates funding and resources from both Avaya and HP to conduct joint marketing, product testing, and continued product integration. Avaya, Microsoft and HP together will build common channels through which "best of breed" products for voice and data communications can be distributed to small and medium businesses.
