Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, in conjunction with its BusinessPartner MEGATECH, has implemented a new communications network at the University of Applied Sciences in Deggendorf, Germany. The university's six campus buildings and dormitories are now networked via 1,700 fixed network ports providing a more reliable IT network, whilst ensuring its student and staff can access academic documents quickly.

Rapid growth of the university over the past few years has driven the need for a new network that can better cope with the volume of traffic without slowing down. Students living in dormitories two kilometres from the campus can now access the university network via an Avaya Wireless LAN (WLAN) enabling them to study more effectively from their rooms. The new system also provides centralised management, meaning that the whole network, including the dormitories can now be, controlled and monitored from a central management station at the university. The Avaya MultiService Network Manager software provides continual updates on the network's performance, highlighting any potential issues before they develop into problems.

The university has worked with Avaya and MEGATECH to provide an infrastructure that is secure as well as being easy to manage. The design will allow the university to expand its network as and when it needs to. There is also the potential to move to a VoIP system or to integrate WLAN access points campus-wide in the future.

Rudolf Loibl, CTO of the University of Applied Sciences Deggendorf, comments: "With the new system in place we can now manage the university's infrastructure without drawing on any external support to manage or administrate the new network. In addition we can control the expansion of the system at our own pace as the university grows. The deployment of the new network has resulted in considerable increases in network performance and faster connections, which gives our users a better experience. Network downtime is now a thing of the past. Avaya and MEGATECH's experience in project management and system installation impressed us throughout."

Despite the fact that Avaya and MEGATECH have previously worked together on other successful projects with the University of Applied Sciences they won the contract following a competitive public tender process. They were chosen because they offered the most cost effective solution.

The new network was designed based on the specifications given by a project planning group consisting of representatives from Avaya and MEGATECH, and the data processing centre at the university and was implemented within a four-month timeframe. Replacing and integrating components in the new infrastructure as well as configuring the network and installing network connections were all completed within two weeks.

Avaya has replaced the university's existing ATM-based equipment with Gigabit Ethernet switching systems, resulting in a significantly higher transfer rate. By integrating the network switch components of the converged infrastructure portfolio: Avaya P882 MultiService Switch, Avaya P580 MultiService and Avaya 330 Stackable Switching System, the transmission rate has been enhanced 6.5-fold from 155 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps. All workstations have also been upgraded to 100 Mbps instead of ten Mbps speed and existing network outlets have been replaced due to the migration to a quicker switching technology.
