Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced that GE Consumer & Industrial, one of the leading lighting companies in the world, has implemented Avaya IP Telephony solutions in Argentina which has enabled the company to improve communications while reducing costs and protecting current investments.

GE began investing in Latin America in 1919. The development of energy and transportation systems in Latin America was key to GE's expansion in the region. General Electric Consumer & Industrial was created in January 2004 through the consolidation of GE Consumer Products (lighting and appliances) and GE Industrial Systems.

When GE C&I outgrew its existing phone system, the company decided the replacement not only needed to support additional capacity, it also had to improve the continuity, consistency and speed of its communications. The solution was implemented by Belltech Argentina, an Avaya Platinum-certified Business Partner. The IP Telephony solution has enabled GE C&I to improve communications with customers and within the different areas of the company, while reducing costs. The new converged network can also accommodate growth and deliver the reliability and responsiveness the company demanded.

IP telephony is software-based technology that uses Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) to transmit voice as data over a computer network. Businesses are adopting this rapidly emerging technology — which includes features such as call forwarding, conferencing, voice messaging and other applications — to enhance the capability of their communication network and reduce costs.

"Our objective is to offer clients an outstanding service and to do so we believe that we have to generate added value to our internal and external communications, improve processes and obtain maximum benefits from our investments in technology. For that reason we have chosen Avaya to support us in this project," said Miguel Romero Carranza, Logistics & IT Manager of GE Consumer & Industrial for Argentina.

In order to maximize productivity and increase its revenues, GE C&I implemented a complete Avaya IP Telephony solution that included: Avaya Communication Manager, the company's flagship IP telephony software running on Avaya S8300 Media Server with board for 100 ports, IP 4610 telephones, trunking lines, and an INTUITY™ AUDIX® LX S8210 Server, all supported by the Avaya Professional Services team.

"The solutions and services provided by Avaya allowed us, by having only one system, to offer our customers improved service in terms of reliability, security and maintenance costs that are in line with their expectations," concluded Carranza.

Avaya converged solutions can be layered onto existing voice and data networks resulting in a quicker implementation and return on the investment. Instead of reinventing networks and discarding previous investments, Avaya solutions help organizations by using existing infrastructure to maximize investments.

"Although GE has long been a global customer of Avaya, this is the first time that it acquires IP Telephony solutions in our region. To us, this is a great challenge, since it is a first step for GE to continue migrating to IP Telephony in other regions of the world," explained Horacio Molinari, managing director for Avaya in the Southern Cone.
