KUKTEM Clinches PIKOM's Premier IT Award with Avaya Solution

  • PIKOM, Malaysia's premier IT award, recognizes Malaysian companies, government bodies and non-profit organizations that successfully apply IT to run their operations more effectively

Avaya announced that the Association of Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM) Premier IT Award has placed the University College of Engineering and Technology Malaysia (KUKTEM) first.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced that the Association of Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM) Premier IT Award (Anugerah Perdana Teknologi Maklumat) has placed the University College of Engineering and Technology Malaysia (KUKTEM) first after a careful nationwide selection of applications by PIKOM in Malaysia.

KUKTEM has more than 200 faculty and staff and about 1,000 students who are equipped with notebooks to access lecture notes, books and examinations online, thanks to the host of solutions from Avaya. One example of the applications is the Library-on-Server application, which allows students to download or read online books stored on the server. This drastically reduces manpower, maintenance and upkeep costs needed to manage a large physical library of books.

Avaya installed the state-of-the-art network in KUKTEM in Kuantan, Malaysia, in 2003. The Avaya 10GE network is the first true converged site among Malaysian tertiary institutions, to use complete end-to-end Avaya solutions. It is also one of the first in Asia Pacific to provide networking technology able to handle data traffic up to 10,000 megabits per second, providing a true converged network where users, whether wired or wireless, run both data and voice traffic across the same platform.

Parents are able to access the campus' management system, which is integrated with Avaya's Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, allowing them to view round the clock scheduling, test results and outstanding fee status online; as well as contact lecturers directly. Avaya also sponsored a lab for internal training for the staff and students of KUKTEM to help them better manage and understand Avaya networking technology.

KUKTEM now has more than 2604 network nodes and near limitless wireless access powered by 168 Avaya Wireless Access Points, which are connected throughout the entire campus of KUKTEM that spreads over 29 buildings. All the points and gateways ride on a 10GE network that carries voice and data on this single backbone.

The nominees for the Public Sector category in the PIKOM Premier IT Award were evaluated on the concept of the network, its design, the product, implementation and security on the ICT project that was implemented and deployed.

The Premier IT Award is to acknowledge and honor Malaysian companies, government bodies and non-profit organizations, which have been most successful in applying IT to run their operations effectively.

Prof Dato' Dr. Abu Azam Md Yassin, Rector of KUKTEM said, "We are delighted and honored to receive this award. In line with our vision to be a world-class educational institution, we need to take steps to demonstrate KUKTEM's potentials and capability in the latest ICT technology. This PIKOM Premier IT Award win is indeed a recognition that we are well on our way to achieving this mission."

Evaluation is based on submission of documents, site visits, interviews as well as final demonstrations convinced the judges that KUKTEM is worthy of the PIKOM Premier IT Award.

Tom Cheong, managing director, ASEAN*, Avaya says: "Avaya has always believed in working closely with our customers to help maximize their network's capabilities to meet future technological needs by using our scalable solutions. We hope that the first-ever 10GE network backbone as well as the Avaya Sponsored Lab have helped KUKTEM, not just to gain the recognition that they well deserve but also to achieve their objective to become an educational haven for their students and faculty through innovative use of Avaya technology."

KUKTEM competed under the Public Sector category, for government agencies and department. Other categories include the Private Sector category, for commercial enterprise/companies and privatized/corporatized government agencies. There is also the Socio-Economy category for Non-Government Organizations (NGO)s, co-operatives, associations, social bodies and other informal organizations.
