Leading Health Care Technology Firm Selects Avaya IP TelephonyPlatform to Transform its Global Operations

05-03-2004
  • New converged voice and data network to serve Cerner distributed enterprise - simplifying administration, speeding decision-making and serving clients more quickly

Avaya announced that the company's Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solutions are providing Cerner Corp., a leading supplier of healthcare information technology solutions, with a new platform designed to transform its global operations.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced that the company's Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solutions are providing Cerner Corp., a leading supplier of healthcare information technology solutions, with a new platform designed to transform its global operations.

Headquartered in North Kansas City, Mo., Cerner provides real-time technology solutions enabling healthcare providers to eliminate paper medical charts, streamline patient care and reduce medical error.

"We're passionate about the impact technology has on our clients' businesses, and we take that same approach in building a communications network to support our own operations," said Eric Siley, Cerner director of information technology. "We want to link Cerner's locations around the globe and achieve economies of scale, while accelerating decision-making and serving our clients. Avaya makes this possible."

As a first step, Cerner adopted an Avaya IP telephony solution to support 1,500 employees at its new research and development center in North Kansas City. Siley says this new Avaya platform provides the foundation Cerner needs to evolve its network over time. As part of this evolution, Cerner has added an Avaya communications server to support its offices in the United Kingdom.

Already, Cerner is realizing cost savings by eliminating unnecessary leased phone lines and is benefiting from having one network to administer instead of two. In addition, IP telephony has significantly streamlined moves, adds and changes. Employees moving to a new office simply take their telephone along and plug it in. Their phone numbers and preferences automatically follow.

Cerner's new converged network is driven by the Avaya MultiVantage™ Communications Applications portfolio - including the company's flagship IP telephony software offering Avaya Communication Manager - running on Avaya Media Servers. Communication Manager provides Cerner employees with more than 800 distinct telephony features - from meet-me conferencing to malicious call tracing and emergency call override capabilities.

To access the network, Cerner employees use Avaya IP Telephones with large graphical displays that allow them to browse the Web, search corporate directories or access information from other business applications. Cerner piloted, and will soon broadly deploy, Avaya Softphones to traveling associates for accessing the network and making or receiving calls from a PC or laptop computer-regardless of their location.

Design, project management, installation and ongoing maintenance support are provided to Cerner by Avaya Global Services, a team of more than 7,000 consultants and professionals skilled in assessing, planning, designing, managing and maintaining converged, multivendor voice and data networks around the globe.

The open, standards-based solution Avaya Global Services designed for Cerner is fully interoperable with the company's data networking infrastructure from Foundry Networks, a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing. Foundry Networks is a Premier member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection program. The DeveloperConnection Program (DevConnect) is a comprehensive set of innovative sales, support, marketing and services programs through which Avaya works with members to develop and promote their products and solutions that interoperate with Avaya solutions.
