Multi-Tech Systems Complements Avaya's Converged Enterprise IPPlatform for Branch Offices

01-13-2004
  • Enterprises With Small Multi-Site Offices Benefit from Reduced Complexity, Improved Efficiency and Increased ROI

Multi-Tech Systems announced an agreement with Avaya to provide a flexible and cost-effective Internet Protocol (IP) telephony gateway system for enterprises with offices of up to ten people within multi-site enterprises.

Multi-Tech Systems, an international provider of converged technology products, today announced an agreement with Avaya, a global leader in communication networks, applications and services, to provide a flexible and cost-effective Internet Protocol (IP) telephony gateway system for enterprises with offices of up to ten people within multi-site enterprises. Multi-Tech's MultiVoIP solution extends Avaya Communication Manager software from a centralised location to small remote branch offices to deliver the same communications tools and features found in larger locations. Major benefits include significant cost savings for calls between remote sites and headquarters, reduced TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) through centralised management of IP telephony across converged communications networks, improved communication capabilities and the preservation of existing investments whilst increasing ROI.

The Multi-Tech/Avaya product combination includes a centralised Avaya Communications Manager platform, running Avaya Communications Manager software, connected via IP over the WAN to remote branch office locations. MultiVoIP gateways are installed at each location supporting up to 10 users, with direct connections for up to eight analogue phone sets and support for IP phone sets or IP softphones connected to the remote office LAN. Each MultiVoIP gateway bridges the remote office VoIP network to the central Communications Manager via an H.323 trunk. This allows enterprises to distribute a common set of call features and communications capabilities throughout the organisation, even to the smallest remote office location.

"The MultiVoIP family fits well with our current portfolio of convergence solutions for enterprise networks," commented Vincent Uppelschoten, EMEA product manager communications systems pision, Avaya. "By integrating the Multi-Tech and Avaya products we are enhancing our technology capabilities in the enterprise branch office space. We are in a position to offer organisations such as those in the finance, manufacturing and retail sectors dramatic cost savings by channelling voice and data services over IP. We are also able to ensure high levels of reliability and business continuity."

The Multi-Tech/Avaya solution eliminates the need to manage disparate, standalone key and PBX platforms with varying features and functions. Instead, the centralised system offers consistent communications and call features to all users in the enterprise including the very small office. A key functionality is its ability to operate in both 'subtend' and 'survivable' modes to ensure business continuity. In 'subtend' mode the integrated gatekeeper is passive as all call processing functions are handled through the Avaya Communications Manager software. If there is a business-impacting event at the main server location, MultiVoIP can re-register with an alternative server. If the IP routed WAN link does down, MultiVoIP enters 'survivable' mode and becomes an active H.323 gatekeeper that manages its analogue phones, analogue trunks, and up to a maximum of 10 analogue and IP phones, depending on model. In this mode users at the remote offices can place and receive calls internally and externally with POTS-like functionality. Once WAN communications are restored, MultiVoIP automatically returns to 'subtend' mode.

"After years of collaboration with Avaya on various projects we are delighted to finalise this latest technology agreement," commented Dilip Mistry, managing director, Multi-Tech Systems EMEA. "In today's business climate the primary concern is to keep expenditure at a minimum whilst generating new opportunities for ROI. The Multi-Tech/Avaya solution addresses this by offering a cost-effective approach to preserving existing investments while enabling use of the newest technology."
