Avaya Inc. Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced that Transport Lausanne, the leading transport company in the Lausanne region of Switzerland, has adopted an Avaya converged communications network to improve services for its 72 million passengers and reduce its communications costs. By migrating to Avaya IP solutions, Transport Lausanne will shave over 130,000 per year off its bottom line, and will experience improved communications processes both internally and with customers.

The Swiss are renowned for their punctuality and accuracy. This is especially true of their transport services and Transport Lausanne is no exception. Transport Lausanne operates from six main sites to effectively manage its 200,000 daily passengers. Previously each of these sites operated its own local, analogue communications system, which meant that staff were unable to communicate easily between sites, compromising performance and control. For example, many day-to-day processes, such as scheduling bus, tram and subway maintenance were undertaken manually. This complicated task was made more difficult due to the absence of a voicemail system as calls often were left unanswered or hand-written messages were lost. Additionally, it was difficult for staff to set up teleconference meetings, and consequently much time was wasted travelling between sites for meetings.

Transport Lausanne required a blend of applications, systems and services compatible with its existing analogue infrastructure operated across six sites. Jean-Philippe Suter, Project Leader, Transport Lausanne said: "You can't run a world-class transport infrastructure using an outdated network environment. Avaya's IP solutions seamlessly integrated with our existing analogue system and are already showing positive results - improved performance, reduced operating costs and a higher quality of customer service."

"Avaya has effected a new way of working for Transport Lausanne. Employees can seamlessly transfer calls between sites, can leave voicemail messages and easily schedule conference calls in order to ensure important daily business can be managed efficiently. Another important element was the creation of a wireless infrastructure. 45 Avaya wireless access points were installed in five sites and, used together with 50 Avaya wireless IP phones, this now enables the downloading of transport data directly from buses. In short, improved communications for Transport Lausanne helps it keep public transport on time," said Jörg Hofmann, Avaya's managing director of Switzerland.

Before the project went live in October 2003, working with its BusinessPartner Telekom & Netzwerk (T&N), Avaya initially installed a full demonstration system, showing media servers, terminals, phones and IP softphones to validate the effectiveness of the system. "We considered a range of competitive solutions, but selected Avaya because it was in a league of its own with regard to cost-savings and investment protection," added Jean-Philippe Suter.

The Avaya flagship IP Telephony offering, Avaya Communication Manager is now installed at Transport Lausanne. The software is running on an Avaya S8700 Media Server with Avaya G700 Media Gateways and across all six of its sites. Approximately 200 employees are using Avaya IP telephones, including 50 Avaya IP wireless phones currently deployed utilising 45 Avaya wireless access points.
