Traveling Avaya IP Telephony Network Helps Transform Communications for Annual Golf Tournaments

08-12-2004
  • Avaya IP Office eliminates need for more than two miles of expensive, cumbersome copper cable at courses around the U.S.; reduces deployment, management costs by 30 to 40 percent

The Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) of America needed to transform its communications capabilities for the tournaments it sponsors nationwide, so the organization turned to an Internet protocol (IP) telephony solution from Avaya.

The Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) of America needed to transform its communications capabilities for the tournaments it sponsors nationwide, so the organization turned to an Internet protocol (IP) telephony solution from Avaya (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services.

Golfers, patrons, tournament officials, event staff and reporters have access to multi-line phones with features such as voice mail, call transfer and hold capabilities, and a host of other telephony applications, just as if they were working from a corporate office.

But instead of working in an office, many of them are at Whistling Straits, a rugged, challenging course that winds along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, where the elevation rises 80 feet (about eight stories of an office building) as players move through the 18 holes. Here, where the 86th PGA Championship begins today, a half dozen Avaya IP Office systems are strategically placed and have become part of the PGA of America's traveling communications network for its major events. As a result, the Association can deliver sophisticated business communication features from the tournament grounds, and quickly and economically dismantle and set up the same network at its next event.

For example, an auto attendant feature answers and routes incoming calls, such as those from thousands of spectators looking for general event information which can be automatically sent to the right staff person to answer.

"Ensuring a top notch communications network that can be moved from event to event and still be cost-effective and functional is as challenging as being stuck in the rough on the 18th hole," said David Baron, president of Safari Telecom, the Avaya certified reseller which helped the PGA design and implement the moveable network.

Before the PGA had the Avaya IP Office network, the Association's work crews had to crisscross a course with more than two miles of heavy and expensive copper cabling to set up communication trailers for golfers, patrons, tournament officials, event staff and reporters from around the globe.

Now, Safari Telecom's work crew can get the network up and running in a third of the time, using half the people, for a savings of nearly 30 to 40 percent. In addition, Safari Telecom can administer the network from a central location, enabling them to update recorded messages, such as information on traffic and parking conditions as needed.

Avaya IP Office is an "all-in-one" office communication solution that brings together voice, data and communications applications for small and mid-size businesses and branch offices of larger enterprises. Because Avaya IP Office supports multiple forms of connectivity, fiber optic cable can be used to connect the network. The fiber cable is lightweight, easy-to-move, inexpensive and efficient, which also contributes to the reduction in setup and dismantle time.

Safari Telecom is providing on-course installation, service and support at Whistling Straits, where the PGA Championship practice rounds began on August 9, and at the Ryder Cup Matches which are scheduled for September.
