Avaya Announces Plans to Accelerate SIP Deployment for Businessesin EMEA

Avaya announced its latest series of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) initiatives for Europe, Middle East and Africa at the 2005 International SIP Conference in Paris.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced its latest series of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) initiatives for Europe, Middle East and Africa at the 2005 International SIP Conference in Paris. According to Avaya, SIP's open architecture will play a major role in the evolution of enterprise communications by enabling easy integration with many other Internet technologies and providing enough flexibility to accommodate an economic migration to new applications. This combined, will contribute to a reduction in total cost of ownership and enhanced productivity.

By focusing on the needs of the customer and businesses, SIP is bringing the true power of communications to the enterprise and giving greater control over work/life balance to the employee. 2,400 Avaya employees across the US and EMEA are already benefiting from SIP to telecommute, prioritise calls and re-route important calls.

Pivotal to the growth and development of its SIP business in the EMEA region, is the Converged Communications Server 2.1, which SIP-enables a multitude of Avaya products , extending them with presence and other advanced telephony capabilities and lies at the heart of Avaya's portfolio of SIP products. One flagship service presented at the SIP Conference today is the Avaya IP Softphone R5 with Instant Messaging; an application that turns any PC into an office phone, allowing its users to send encrypted instant messages, initiate 'click-to-talk' calls including numbers listed on Web sites and shows contact status/availability.

In addition, Avaya is publishing an open-based Application Programming Interface (API) with the latest software for SIP, intended to help users and independent software vendors manage and develop the powerful communication applications enabled by the SIP protocol.

Margaret Hopkins, associate analyst with Analysys states, "The 'reach anyone, anytime, anywhere' features that SIP and presence can bring are particularly attractive in the enterprise where the smaller scale and closed user groups make the implementation more practical than in public networks."

Further reinforcement to help drive SIP uptake in EMEA comes in the form of the newly created Avaya SIP BusinessPartner Certification Programme, developed to support BusinessPartners across the region sell and support SIP uptake. The certification is being proactively offered to existing Avaya BusinessPartners, all of which already hold IP telephony certification. It is expected that up to 80 per cent of BusinessPartners will qualify for SIP certification by the end of 2005. The certification programme is offered through real-time virtual Webinars and online information resources on products, installation and maintenance.

To kick-off the new certification programme, Avaya announced its first SIP-certified BusinessPartner, Soluziona, a Spanish multi-national integrated engineering and consulting services company. "With the rapid evolution of VoIP services, the need for open standards-based systems to facilitate the transition from traditional to IP communications becomes increasingly important," says Marcelo Vázquez, Business Development Director of the Telecommunications Engineering pision of Soluziona. Vázquez continues, "A key driver in business communications transformation continues to be the development of SIP which has evolved to become one of the protocols of choice for deploying enhanced voice and data services."

Speaking at the conference, Mun Yuen Leong, Avaya chief technology officer and vice president, comments, "Many enterprises believe that SIP is still in the developmental stage and only being explored by operators, but looking at global business trends, it is incredibly encouraging to see a steady uptake of SIP in businesses. Businesses are increasingly intrigued by the promise of SIP offering rich networking options, integrated communications and presence. Avaya is positioning itself to bolster and support enterprises in the EMEA region as they take their first tentative steps into the SIP arena. We are focused on delivering compelling business value as business investment in IP communications will be driven by demonstrable return on investment and revenue generation."
