Avaya Completes Next Phase in Supporting the 2006 FIFA World Cup

Avaya announced the successful installation of Avaya converged communication solutions in six of the 2006 FIFA World Cup German Local Organising Committee (LOC) venue offices.

Avaya, Inc. (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today announced the successful installation of Avaya converged communication solutions in six of the 2006 FIFA World Cup German Local Organising Committee (LOC) venue offices. Over the last two months, Avaya implemented network IP hardware in the LOC locations of Berlin, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Hanover and Cologne. Avaya is the official converged communications provider of the 2006 FIFA World Cup .

This sets the stage for the run up to the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 taking place in Germany in June, the tournament considered as the final test before the 2006 FIFA World Cup . The remaining LOC venue offices in Kaiserslautern, Dortmund, Hamburg, Gelsenkirchen and Stuttgart will also be equipped with Avaya products during the course of this month.

The Avaya solutions deployed at the German LOC for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup venue offices include Avaya IP devices, media servers and media gateways, data switches and wireless access points. In order to secure best assistance at the operational level before and during the upcoming games, Avaya Global Services will provide comprehensive support for the communications hardware it installs. The provision of reliable and scalable solutions that can be easily expanded to accommodate peak time communications plus the allocation of service and support resources is vital to FIFA's organization and management ahead as well as during the world largest sporting events.

120 German LOC employees benefit at present from the broad spectrum of functionalities offered by Avaya solutions. En route to the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 this number will rise to more than 360 people. As preparations for the 2006 FIFA World Cup advance, the infrastructure will accommodate the required voice and data ports and offer simultaneously access for over 2,000 users. The installed network IP hardware ties the LOC venue offices together as one system.

All of the locations are connected to an ATM core backbone wide area network (WAN) provided by Deutsche Telekom. In each stadium, the critical network components will be fully duplicated to secure the highest availability of the converged communication network even in case of outages. This allows for uninterrupted, efficient collaboration between German LOC employees FIFA representatives based in Switzerland, as well as suppliers and German Stadia operators.

The single converged communications network based on Avaya hardware will be part of the communications core deployed at the upcoming games. It offers FIFA and the LOC versatile benefits. Control and management can be accomplished centrally. Additionally, savings on network administration and communications between locations can be realised, as traffic does not run over separate voice and data infrastructures.

Mike Kelly, Head of FIFA IT Solution, FIFA commented: "A bullet-proof communications network is essential for us in the preparation stage and preliminary to make the forthcoming tournaments — FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup — successful. Avaya has already a time-tested record in provisioning the right products and allocating the best skilled people for processing even the most complex of tasks, including the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003. As a result, we continue to trust Avaya network hardware as the best foundation for a state-of-the-art converged communications infrastructure. The solutions in place fully serve our current needs and will also fulfil our longer-term requirements for becoming a central component of the new network deployed in 2006."

Doug Gardner, Avaya's managing director FIFA World Cup technical program explains: "As preparations for the tournaments increase in volume, a reliable and scalable converged infrastructure becomes crucial for speedy and efficient handling of organisational matters. FIFA and the German LOC are placing their faith in Avaya to deliver on the communications requirements."
