Avaya and Meru Networks Join Forces to Help Businesses Extend Intelligent Communications to On-Campus Mobile Workers

09-08-2005

Avaya and Meru Networks, the global leader in wireless voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure, announced a reseller agreement under which Avaya will resell Meru Networks' complete wireless LAN (WLAN) portfolio and deliver mobility solutions that keep workers connected as they travel across a corporate campus.

Avaya, Inc. (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, and Meru Networks, the global leader in wireless voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure, today announced a reseller agreement under which Avaya will resell Meru Networks' complete wireless LAN (WLAN) portfolio and deliver mobility solutions that keep workers connected as they travel across a corporate campus.

The agreement formalizes collaborative marketing and sales initiatives the companies already have in place. Recently, Meru was named a Premier member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection program, which certified the interoperability of Meru's Wireless LAN system with key Internet protocol (IP) telephony solutions from Avaya. Together, Meru's unique, cellular-like WLAN technology and Avaya's leadership role in global IP telephony will provide customers with converged, open standards-based wireless VoIP solutions that extend intelligent business communications capabilities to mobile workers and deliver the performance, productivity and cost benefits of wireless IP telephony.

Unlike other WLAN systems in which access points work independently and must be configured to deliver adjacent, non-overlapping coverage, Meru Networks' coordinated, "cellular" WLAN architecture enables all access points to work together to provide a seamless blanket of coverage that scales transparently and delivers wireline-quality IP voice for mobile enterprise users, including those on Wi-Fi handsets.

Avaya created DeveloperConnection to promote interoperable communications features and applications that businesses can integrate into their operations to help them achieve a competitive advantage. The use of open standards allows companies to add new capabilities without having to replace their existing network infrastructure.

Avaya's agreement with Meru Networks expands the ecosystem of companies partnering with Avaya to extend enterprise communications capabilities to mobile workers. The joint solutions resulting from the agreement include the following Avaya and Meru Networks products and solutions:

  • Avaya Communication Manager IP telephony software
  • Avaya Media Servers
  • Avaya Voice Priority Processor
  • Avaya IP Office 403
  • Avaya 4600 Series IP telephones
  • Avaya 3616/3626 IP Wireless telephones
  • Avaya IP Softphone and Avaya IP Softphone for Pocket PC
  • Avaya Phone Manager Pro
  • Meru AP-200 Access Point
  • Meru MC-500, 1000 and 3000 Controllers

The companies share several joint customers, including Saint John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, which has deployed a campus mobility solution that includes both Avaya IP telephony solutions and the Meru Wireless LAN system, with plans for voice-over-WLAN applications.

"Our customers are increasingly demanding the convenience of mobility integrated with the performance and cost benefits of IP telephony in their networks," said Micky Tsui, vice president and general manager, Communications Systems pision, Avaya. "Avaya and Meru Networks are now offering our customers a complete mobility solution that meets these requirements for converged voice, video and data applications over wireless LAN networks - helping businesses extend intelligent communications capabilities to mobile workers."
