Avaya Inc. announced the first UK trial of the Avaya/Nokia fixed tomobile communication application on Nokia Series 60 smart phones.

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services today announced the first UK trial of the Avaya/Nokia fixed to mobile communication application on Nokia Series 60 smart phones. B A R Honda Formula One team will be transformed through the use of Nokia 60 Series mobile phones with Avaya Mobile IP telephony software in its global operations. This will enable advanced mobility capabilities such as 'one business number' extending from the office to the mobile phone for the first time. Also, the application gives the user a business and a personal profile with respective bills to eliminate onerous, manual separation of business and personal calls. In addition, the application will allow B A R Honda to centralise control of landline and mobile phone costs.

 

B A R Honda was looking for communication technology to support its goal of reducing its race times. The innovative, mobile application linking IP telephony from fixed line infrastructure to Nokia 6630 smart phones, will provide B A R Honda's mobile team members with 'one number' for faster and more effective communication. This means that B A R Honda's engineers can be contacted more quickly as their landline and mobile numbers come together in one device. Regardless of where they are at trackside, they can gain faster access to information with which to support drivers competing to reduce race times. Also, the mobile application will crack the previously elusive challenge of centralised control of fixed and mobile communication.

For example, race engineers and business development managers will be able to use Nokia smart phones wherever they are working around the world to improve productivity and reduce costs by routing more calls - whether from home, headquarters or racetracks - over B A R Honda's converged communication network. This ease of communication will save time for the team's employees to focus on activities that improve race performance.

B A R Honda migrated to IP telephony six months ago. Now, the business is looking to extend its technological lead and trial the Avaya/Nokia fixed/mobile communication application to compete at 19 annual races around the world. The fixed/mobile convergence trial, which will be completed in August, has been installed at the company's 86,000 sqm team operations centre site in Brackley, UK and will be piloted by 20 employees from all areas of the business including trackside (race and test) teams and factory (engineers and mechanics).

Commenting on the trial, David France, head of IT, B A R Honda said: "We migrated to IP telephony early this year and since then, we have delivered significant time savings and improved communication for our team members and partners."

"We are anticipating excellent feedback from this collaboration with Nokia and Avaya to provide better mobile communication for our employees. The trial will coincide with our gruelling race and test schedule including the British Grand Prix in Silverstone and will help us increase productivity with functionality such as the 'one number' fixed/mobile communication application which will save us an estimated half day needed to set up communication costs at each Grand Prix," he continues.

Avaya business partner, STL Communications Ltd, completed B A R Honda's migration to IP telephony and new communication applications. Also, STL provides B A R Honda with Avaya ServiceSpan (remote and on-site network monitoring services) 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Avaya Communication Manager is Avaya's flagship IP telephony software, part of the Avaya MultiVantage Communications Applications suite.
