CNIPA Showcases Avaya IP Telephony and Enterprise Fixed Mobile Convergence for Italian Public Sector

09-19-2005

Avaya announced the installation of an Avaya converged voice and data network at the National Centre for Information Technologies in Public Administration (CNIPA).

Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communication applications, systems and services, today announced the installation of an Avaya converged voice and data network at the National Centre for Information Technologies in Public Administration (CNIPA). The new Avaya IP network has enhanced communication capabilities across the Government organisation, improving productivity and is helping align the network to its business processes.

CNIPA has replaced its existing PBX system with Avaya IP telephony and unified messaging solutions to improve communications for its 250 telephone users at its main location in Rome. This set-up increases the efficiency and speed of employee communications across departments to support the organisation's primary purpose which is to identify, test and propose new innovative communication technologies for public administration departments across Italy. Also, it will deliver significant savings in both time and communication costs, which will be derived from intelligent call routing integrated within the corporate network.

Additionally, CNIPA is trialing Avaya Mobile enterprise fixed mobile convergence (FMC) applications for Series 60 platform devices jointly developed with Nokia. These downloadable applications transform Series 60 platform mobile devices into virtual desktop phones by enabling workers on the move to access the features and functions of their Avaya Communication Manager office desk phone.

The trial, which is due for completion during the month of October, is taking place at CNIPA's head office in Rome and is being piloted by employees from all areas of the business, including the president of CNIPA and the information technology department.

An intuitive user interface enables advanced mobility capabilities such as 'one business number' extending from the office to the mobile phone, providing easy access to business telephony features such as abbreviated extension dialing, multi-party conferencing, call transfer, voice mail forwarding, group call features, and call forward to coverage for executive support.. Also, the application gives the user a business and a personal profile with respective bills to eliminate onerous, manual separation of business and private calls. In addition, the application will allow CNIPA to centralise control of landline and mobile phone costs.

"Our organisation exists in order to discover the most innovative new technologies to improve all aspects of public administration. Facilitating effective communications is a key part of this focus," said Emilio Frezza, Consigliere per le telecomunicazioni of CNIPA, "IP Telephony is a technology that we, ourselves are using and actively recommending to other public administration departments due to the benefits we have seen. We are extending this to include the fixed mobile convergence trial and are anticipating excellent feedback from this collaboration with Avaya and Nokia."

"CNIPA's move to converged communications represents a significant trend in the Italian government sector," said Sergio Villa, Managing director, Avaya Italy, "By converging all its communications over a single network and trialling next generation technology such as fixed mobile convergence, CNIPA is well positioned to enjoy a strong return on investment and also to contribute to the organisation's achievement of business goals through improved customer service, effectiveness and overall communications.

Notes to Editors:

The solutions comprises the following products: S8710 media server and G650 media gateway and IP telephones (4610, 4620 and 4625).
