New Avaya IP Telephones Support Productivity Applications to HelpCompanies Share Information Faster and More Flexibly

Avaya has introduced several new Internet Protocol (IP) telephones that enhance the user experience and expand the ways in which information is delivered and shared.Avaya (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of business communications applications, services and systems, has introduced several new Internet Protocol (IP) telephones that enhance the user experience and expand the ways in which information is delivered and shared. Enterprises and third-party software developers can take advantage of new features embedded in the phones and use an external development platform to create customized productivity-enhancing phone applications, including the ability to proactively "push" information to the desktop screen phone for instant information sharing.

IP telephony is one of the fastest growing technologies in the world, expanding at an annual rate of 80%, according to Synergy Research Group. IP telephony manages voice as digital packets on a converged communications network, making it easier to integrate voice and data applications.

The Avaya 4621, 4622 and 4625 IP phones are designed to enable companies to expand the role of communications in their businesses and to better serve customers. Updated software provides powerful graphics capabilities that allow businesses to share verbal and visual information on-screen throughout an enterprise instantly, including pictures, graphs and charts. With large, crisp, backlit screens and the addition of a full color pixel-based display, the new additions to Avaya's IP telephone portfolio support interactive applications ranging from directory retrieval to proactive office alerts and on-screen messaging between colleagues.

"The advancements we announce today illustrate how IP telephony is enabling telephones to provide value beyond point-to-point voice communications," said Geoffrey Baird, Avaya vice president, Communications Appliance pision. "Telephones now operate as intelligent endpoints on the network, capable of delivering a variety of information in a variety of ways. Sophisticated applications give businesses the ability to integrate voice more effectively into business processes and break through the clutter of e-mail, voice mail and word-of-mouth when sharing timely information."

The Avaya 4622 is customized to address the telephony needs of contact center agents, supporting dual headsets while eliminating the unnecessary handset. Combined with the ability to deliver Web-based call center and customer care applications, this model can help improve agent productivity within IP contact centers.

Support for standard Internet protocols makes it easier to incorporate Web-based information in on-screen messages or interactive directory and retrieval menus. For instance, the XML-based WML (Wireless Markup Language) 1.3 browser that is integrated into the new telephone models enables delivery of Web-based content, such as corporate directories from the company intranet, to phone display screens. Based on standard industry protocols, Avaya telephones also interoperate with phones from other vendors, making it easier to integrate applications across multi-vendor communications networks.

A flexible applications development platform associated with the new phones addresses the needs of a variety of companies. The Avaya Phone Applications Gateway solution, based on technology from industry leader and Avaya DeveloperConnection partner Citrix Systems, enables organizations to increase employee productivity by delivering both off-the-shelf and custom applications to the screens and speakers of their Avaya IP telephones. Using the simple, Web-based interface of the Avaya Broadcast Server software, businesses can quickly compose and broadcast on-screen messages containing information such as security alerts, corporate news or travel advisories that incorporate text, graphics and audio. In addition, enterprises can use the Avaya Design Studio tool to create new applications or to make existing Web-based applications, such as customer service information, available on-screen.

"The new Avaya IP Phones have much improved displays, and the updated software enables a variety of advanced broadcast communication capabilities," said Allan Sulkin, president, TEQConsult Group. "Combined with end-to-end network media and control signaling encryption for security and full feature functionality of earlier 4600 series models, the expanded portfolio suite marks a step forward in greatly enhancing the role of desktop telephony in Avaya solutions."
