Symbol Technologies and Avaya Jointly Deliver Enterprise Mobility Solutions for Campus Workers

11-30-2005

Symbol Technologies, The Enterprise Mobility Company™, and Avaya announced the availability of a joint mobility solution that helps mobile professionals easily access essential enterprise applications and communications capabilities as they roam throughout their workplace.

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company™, and Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, today announced the availability of a joint mobility solution that helps mobile professionals easily access essential enterprise applications and communications capabilities as they roam throughout their workplace. The solution, which combines the two companies' software, systems and devices, is ideal for retail, healthcare, manufacturing and environments where campus workers require mobile computers, scanners and other technologies combined with voice communications.

The joint collaboration integrates Symbol's advanced data capture, mobile computing platforms, and wireless infrastructure with Avaya's market-leading Internet protocol (IP) telephony software and mobile client applications. It combines Symbol's MC50 Enterprise Digital Assistant (EDA), WS5100 Wireless Switch, and AP300 Access Port with the Avaya IP Softphone based on the Avaya Communication Manager platform.

The joint solution is designed to improve organizational productivity by giving workers a wireless mobile computer that delivers advanced levels of voice quality, and can perform many activities that would otherwise require the use of several devices. For example, a mobile retail associate can use it to check inventory levels in real-time, initiate overhead paging, scan prices, access corporate directories, photograph returned merchandise, and make or receive high-quality phone calls - all while roaming around a work campus. Additionally, all of the phone functionality featured on a desktop office phone, such as transfer, conference and business extension dialing, is available from this wireless device.

"Increasingly, enterprises are seeking to provide greater support to their mobile workers by extending desktop functionality to their mobile devices," said Jeff Snyder, research vice president at Gartner. "For these communications applications to deliver increased productivity, however, they must be suited to the specific demands of mobile workers. This includes high quality voice, tailoring for specific types of users, and focus on usability."

The overall global market for enterprise mobile solutions is projected to be $7.6 billion in 2008 ¹. Avaya and Symbol will collaborate together to more effectively serve this global marketplace through both direct and indirect sales channels.

Symbol Joins Avaya DeveloperConnection Program

Symbol and Avaya also announced they have completed interoperability testing and the joint solution unveiled today has been certified compliant with Avaya IP telephony solutions through the Avaya DeveloperConnection Program. The program is an initiative to develop, market and sell innovative third-party products that interoperate with Avaya technology.

"In this era of enterprise mobility, the combination of VoIP and Symbol's WS5100, AP300 and MC50 enterprise digital assistant extends desktop phone functionality to mobile professionals roaming throughout the enterprise, empowering them to be more productive," said Pat McCullough, vice president and general manager of Symbol's Solutions pision. "Symbol's compliance certification with Avaya and the availability of a joint mobile computing solution demonstrates our commitment to provide mobility solutions to meet the unique needs of our customers. Interoperability with Avaya's IP technology means a more reliable and high-quality experience for customers seeking voice solutions."

The Symbol MC50 EDA provides mobile professionals with access into business operations by capturing and exchanging data in real-time and providing complete enterprise communications capabilities. The award-winning WS5100 Wireless Switch and AP300 Access Port aid in the movement of information to and from the point of business activity to increase productivity and improve customer satisfaction. The Symbol solution provides pre-emptive roaming and data load balancing that are critical for "walk while you work" enterprise mobility environments.

The Avaya IP Softphone is a virtual representation of a desktop phone placed on a PC, laptop, EDA or PDA. It offers access to real-time voice communications and the features of Avaya Communication Manager such as managing multiple call appearances, transfer, conference, malicious call trace, bridged line appearance, and over 120 other end user capabilities. Communication Manager software is part of Avaya's award-winning portfolio of IP-based MultiVantage™ Communications Applications for telephony, contact centers, messaging and unified communications.

"Mobility is a key piece of Avaya's strategy to extend intelligent communications to mobile workers who need to be accessible to customers, co-workers, and business processes - regardless of their location on campus," said Geoffrey Baird, vice president, Communications Appliances pision, Avaya. "The solution we've developed with Symbol reinforces our ongoing commitment to introducing world-class solutions that integrate voice with business processes to create a competitive advantage for enterprises with high mobility needs."

Symbol and Avaya also collaborated to optimize the solution's voice quality over wireless connections using the Avaya IP Softphone and Symbol's Voice Quality Manager (VQM), a device resident software client. This enhances the user experience during a Voice over WiFi call by linking the Avaya IP Softphone with Symbol MC50 EDA's advanced audio and wireless capabilities.

The solution is available jointly from Avaya and Symbol on a worldwide basis, and will be brought to market by the two companies. It will also be available through affiliated business partners, including Catalyst Telecom, a value-added distributor for Avaya and sales unit of ScanSource, Inc.

"This collaboration will provide Symbol and Avaya resellers with more opportunities to strengthen their convergence offering and deliver a total solution to their end-user customers," said Buck Baker, senior vice president of merchandising, Catalyst Telecom. "We're so excited about this effort because we believe it is a key factor in making the convergence of VoIP and enterprise mobility a reality, while also helping to further the overall acceptance of converged communications."

As a member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection program, Symbol Technologies is eligible to submit products for compliance testing by the Avaya Solution Interoperability and Test Lab. Avaya engineers develop a comprehensive test plan for each application to verify whether it is Avaya compliant, helping to ensure that businesses can confidently add best-in-breed capabilities to their network without having to replace their existing infrastructure.
