NSC Powers Up New Communications Solution for Joy Mining Machinery and P&H MinePro Services

08-09-2006

Joy Global (incorporating Joy Mining Machinery and P&H MinePro) a leader in the development, manufacture, distribution and service of both above and underground mining equipment recently selected communications integrator, NSC Enterprise Solutions Pty Ltd to design, deploy and maintain a new communications system from Avaya.

Brisbane, Australia – The mining of black coal is one of Australia's most important industries, creating significant employment in regional Australia, providing fuel for low-cost electricity generation and steel-making and generating vital export income.

The coal industry is supported by a strong equipment and services sector and one of the key players in this field is Joy Global (incorporating Joy Mining Machinery and P&H MinePro) a leader in the development, manufacture, distribution and service of both above and underground mining equipment.

With its head offices in Moss Vale NSW and Brisbane QLD and sites throughout NSW, Queensland and WA, Joy and P&H recently selected communications integrator, NSC Enterprise Solutions Pty Ltd to design, deploy and maintain a new communications system.

"Our existing NEC PABXs were reaching the end of their usefulness," said Mr. Frank Raczka, Shared Service Manager, Joy Mining Machinery. "We wanted a solution that would meet our present requirements as well as provide a robust and flexible platform for the future. However, as our LAN/WAN environment is not ready for a fully converged IP Telephony solution, we needed to find an IP based option that would be flexible enough to support a hybrid environment comprising analogue and digital handsets on the desktop."

Together Joy Mining and P&H MinePro have sites around Australia each using rudimentary analogue phones with none of today’s smart features such as directory or voice mail.

"We were looking for a solution capable of supporting advanced voice requirements and providing cost-efficiencies on inter-site traffic across our new corporate WAN," said Mr. Raczka.

"We were looking for a scalable solution which would provide increased operational functionality in the short term and a platform for growth in the long term," he said. "The Avaya hybrid solution proposed by NSC was the perfect answer."

The first stage of the implementation comprises six standalone solutions which will become networked once the Telstra WAN is in place.

The Avaya solution consists of Avaya S8300 and S8500 Media Servers running Avaya Communication Manager Software as well as a series of G700 and G650 Media Gateways. In addition to providing increased connectivity between each location, the introduction of aapplications such as EC500 (mobile bridge), Softphone and Meet-me conferencing will significantly improve communications for remote and mobile workers.

"Bringing conferencing in-house will not only provide considerable cost efficiencies but will also allow us to communicate more frequently thereby increasing overall business efficiency," said Mr Frank Raczka.

The centralised voice mail platform also supports multimedia allowing Joy staff to receive faxes via their email.

According to Mr. Raczka, NSC was chosen because of its national presence, its proven experience with multi-site IP telephony solutions and its ability to provide a hybrid solution to meet Joy Mining"s specific requirements.
