The University of Macau (UM) has successfully deployed an Avaya IP telephony solution to meet an increasing demand for a campus-wide communications service. This new system has enabled new communications features such as voicemail and "Meet-me" conferencing and is a scalable platform for future expansion.

HONG KONG – Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV) today announced that the University of Macau (UM) has successfully deployed an Avaya IP telephony solution to meet an increasing demand for a campus-wide communications service. This new system from Avaya, a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, has enabled new communications features such as voicemail and "Meet-me" conferencing. The system immediately improved the total costs of ownership, particularly in optimizing infrastructure resources, as well as simplifying support and administration. It has also set a scalable platform for future expansion.

As the first phase of UM's initiative to upgrade the whole communications system, the Avaya IP telephony solution has been implemented in three new buildings. Part of the traditional key-line systems were also replaced with Avaya IP-based systems, while some existing phone sets can be re-used. UM now enjoys a highly flexible and stable communications system, and people can benefit from new features no matter what kind of phone sets they use.

UM plans to eventually replace all the existing key-line system to support the communications needs of over 6,000 students and 600 staff. The university will also deploy IP Telephony system in the new buildings as the university expands. This first phase clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of the solution, making UM confident that the new system can support its future plan.

At the same time, UM also plans to deploy advanced IP enabled communications features and functions to benefit teachers and students collaboration, which include mobility, video conferencing, fax over voicemail, and IP phone applications.

"The Avaya solution has delivered its promised capabilities and quality.  We were also impressed by the professionalism of Avaya and its partner’s implementation service," said Gordon Song, Head of General Administration Bureau. "The new system is stable, flexible and feature-rich, making our selection criteria a reality. We are happy that we have made a good and long term investment in Avaya solution."

"Avaya is committed to bringing advanced communications technologies to educational institutions and future generations. We are delighted to see our solution has enabled better communications and collaboration among teachers and students in the University of Macau now and in the future. We believe our solutions will deliver more values to the academic community at the university as they continue their applications deployment, and make communications more intelligent," said Timothy Mak, country director, Avaya Hong Kong & Taiwan.

The Avaya solution that UM has deployed includes Avaya Communication Manager running on an Avaya S8700 Media Server and Avaya G650 Media Gateway, with Avaya Modular Messaging, and IP screen phones.
