BEIJING, China – China's hospitality segment is booming, as the country prepares to stage mega events like the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and the World Expo 2010. In addition, the tourism industry is flourishing attracting record number of visitors. Avaya, as one leading providers of business communications solutions for hotels and resorts in China, has gained traction in this industry and seen double digital growth in the first half of FY2008.

According to official statistics, the number of star hotels in China has grown from 6029 in 2000 to 12751 at the end of 2006, at an annual growth rate of 15.3 percent. By year 2007, China has established 361 five start hotels and 1631 four star hotels. The country expects to see investment in hotels to reach 340 billion RMB yuan ($US48.6 billion) from 2006 to 2010.

Lodging Econometrics (LE), a hospitality research firm in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, reported in October 2007 that there are a total of 1,555 hotels with 366,679 rooms in the construction pipeline for the 24 countries in the APAC region. China accounts for 50% of all planned projects in the Asia-Pacific region and an amazing 60% of all guestrooms.

"We have seen strong and growing demand for communications systems from China's hotels. Not only are newly built hotels adopting leading technologies and applications, the more established hotels are also keen to upgrade systems to provide best of breed services, and enhance operation efficiency," said Dinesh Malkani, General Manager of Avaya China. "Needless to say, the hospitality industry has unique communications needs and together with our partner ecosystem, we have been able to design solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of these customers in China."

Among these hotels are Park Hyatt Shanghai, The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya, and Beijing Marriot Hotel City Wall, which is the largest Marriott hotel outside of the USA with 1312 rooms. Park Hyatt Shanghai occupies the 79th to 93rd floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), which with 101 storey will be one of the tallest buildings in the world. A number of hotels and convention centers within the Beijing Olympic Village are also deploying IP Telephony solutions from Avaya.

As in other verticals, hotels are using Unified Communications to better serve customers and gain a competitive advantage. By providing consistent and personalized experiences, enhancing productivity of its employees and initiating innovative services, hotels are in a much better position to attain high customer satisfaction level, and to help drive overall business.

Avaya has customized solutions for hotels in China with innovative applications including, wireless check in and check out to reduce quest wait time; personalized IP Phone content based on guest preferences; location based services to track location of staff, guests, as well as hotel assets, so as to provide accurate and prompt services.
