Avaya Data Solutions Gains Business Momentum

08-04-2010

Avaya announced a dramatic increase in business momentum for the Avaya Data Solutions business unit.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – Avaya, a global leader in enterprise communications systems, software and services, today announced a dramatic increase in business momentum for the Avaya Data Solutions business unit.

The Avaya Data Solutions (ADS) unit has generated four consecutive quarters of quarter-over-quarter growth. This has been driven primarily by its new 'Fit for Purpose' market strategy and recent portfolio enhancements, new lead generation campaigns, and executing on plans to maximize on the company's larger, combined, post-acquisition customer base. ADS' underlying value proposition of delivering data networking solutions that are up to seven times more resilient, 20 times better performing, 40 percent more energy efficient and offer up to 50 percent better total cost of ownership* are also driving widespread interest among customers and industry analysts.

"Avaya is positioning data solutions to play a critical role in the company's growth, focusing on a 'Fit for Purpose' strategy that will resonate with customers who want to maximize their communications investments," said Zeus Kerravala, distinguished research fellow, Yankee Group. "Avaya is focused on delivering a strong data portfolio that provides 'no compromise' reliability, scalability and efficiency. Enterprises should never have to compromise one aspect of network performance for another, and Avaya's Data portfolio delivers all three."

"Our Fit for Purpose strategy is really resonating in the market. The 'one-size-fits-all' approach to data networking is no longer a compelling business case," said Steve Bandrowczak, president, Avaya Data Solutions. "Customers are telling us they want unique solutions that are tailored and best-designed to support their specific communications requirements. Today's CIOs are focused on saving money, driving new revenue streams, increasing the loyalty of their customers and creating competitive differentiation. Our go-to-market strategy is focused on addressing these needs with some of the most competitive products in the industry."

Earlier this year, Avaya announced key new data product innovations including new Ethernet routing solutions to help enterprises and data centers boost capacity and embrace Unified Communications (UC) and virtualization; high-density,- performance and resilient network management solutions that can more effectively manage multi-user configurations, provisioning and troubleshooting; an advanced SIP gateway solution to more cost-effectively provide survivable voice services for branch locations; and an advanced Enterprise Class 802.11n wireless solution that easily and seamlessly extends UC applications to mobile users. Also this month, ADS launched a new WLAN solution to help customers maximize the value of their existing WLAN investments and upgrade to more powerful solutions via a simple software upload without the need for costly hardware replacements.

"Cutting-edge technology, including a whole new wave of products announced by ADS just this April right after being integrated into Avaya, continues to demonstrate to customers that the Avaya innovation machine continues unabated," Bandrowczak said.

ADS has experienced a strong uptake in both new and legacy business since being acquired in December 2009. This includes key wins in vertical markets for healthcare, finance, hospitality, education and city government networking. Following are sample customers who have recently upgraded or bought new Avaya Data Solutions:

"The idea of merging and placing all of our data and all of our voice communications on the same network was a daunting proposition—especially in an environment that is so perse, with data volume being unpredictable, in constant peaks and valleys. However, since we went live with the first phase of our implementation, we have not had one single flaw, failure, outage, or issue that was network-related. I can honestly say that we could not even think about running all the applications that we have today, nor could we be planning those we have in mind for the future without such a robust and reliable network.  We're well equipped to handle all of the County’s needs both now and in the foreseeable future with an infrastructure that enables a return on investment on nearly $200,000 each year."

– Brandon Jackson, Chief Information Officer, Gaston County, North Carolina

"As one of the top five percent of business schools, we have no choice but to remain at the forefront of the education technology vanguard. The principal reason for our upgrading the infrastructure was to handle our evolving movement toward virtualization. We are virtualizing just about everything we can; so, whereas before we had 47 servers with multiple CPUs, memory, power supplies, hard drives, network connections, and other underutilized resources, now we have fewer servers with connections to our SAN infrastructure via our Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 8800 core. Now, all the data goes to the network. For that we need zero latency and nine-nines reliability, which the Avaya ERS 8800 technology gave us. Avaya has afforded us significant savings, including an estimated 20 percent in capital savings, reductions of five percent of our overall IT electricity spend, and maintenance cost reductions of 25 percent."

– Michael Vertefeuille, Chief Operating and Technology Officer, University of Connecticut School of Business, Storrs, Connecticut

"Avaya Configuration and Orchestration Manager (Avaya COM), part of the Avaya Unified Communications Management suite, has increased our network uptime by minimizing configuration errors. Utilizing the easy step-by-step wizards and intuitive web dashboard allows my team of engineers to easily see SNMP alerts and enables resolving issues quickly. With Avaya COM we have reduced configuration setup times by 20 percent, resulting in a decrease in our operational costs."

– Jesse Weeks, Senior Systems Engineer, Madison County Board of Education, Richmond, Kentucky

"The classroom does not end at the door. Lincoln Land is focused on enabling learning without borders. When Avaya approached us with their next generation Avaya Wireless LAN 8100 Series solution, we immediately signed up as a beta customer. As an education provider, the resiliency and reliability of our wireless network is imperative. We share a history of cooperation with Avaya and initial testing of their next-generation WLAN 8100 Series solution looks like it will serve our needs with all the success that has been the hallmark of our relationship."

– Jeff Bartolazzi, Network Administrator, Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Illinois

"It isn't about the network, it's about our applications. I don't know everything about the technical details, nor should I have to. I focus my efforts on improving student achievement and improving graduation rates, not bits and bytes. Avaya's network enabled us to meet the new demands of the information environment and use the familiarity of the students with the on-line world to the advantage of both. This enhanced environment helps us meet the needs of the schools, the district and State, while accounting for the looming increased need in our schools."

– Eric Sipes, Executive Director, Information Technologies, North Kansas City Schools, Kansas City

"A few years ago, it was enough to have limited mobility and adequate bandwidth for most applications. But today, speeds of one gigabit or more are commonplace, and the idea of not being able to accommodate mobility is a foreign concept to our student body. This bandwidth explosion has been driven by very savvy users that are accustomed to having all their digital media at their fingertips - from any device, from any location, available securely at any time. It's not pie-in-the-sky — it’s happening right here at our University thanks to wired and wireless, secure data infrastructure from Avaya."

- Ahmed El-Haggan, PhD, Vice President of IT, CIO, and Computer Science Professor, Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland

"For the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we had to provide an always-on, converged network that could support all the network traffic needed to run the Games and manage it to deliver peak performance. With Avaya Visualization Performance and Fault Manager and its real-time network monitoring, key performance indicators and extensive knowledge of network devices, we were able to monitor device health degradation and react to it before it impacted the network. While successfully managing 55,000 interfaces, Avaya Unified Communications Management was a key element in allowing Bell to deliver a flawless network for the Games."

– Kevin Harshaw, Senior Director Olympic Operations, Bell

"The green aspect of the Avaya solution is particularly compelling and is consistent with our Island philosophy. Avaya's hospitality solution enables the flexibility of wired and wireless communications with no degradation of performance, which is very important to our guests. And, it enables us to offer new amenities to make our hotel that much more attractive and competitive. Avaya provided more bang for the buck compared to others we considered."

– Sean Vaziri, Director of Information Technology, Trump International Hotel & Tower Waikiki, Honolulu
