Japan's International University of Kagoshima Deploys Avaya Energy Saver for a Greener, More Cost-effective Network

The International University of Kagoshima has deployed the Avaya Energy Saver feature on Avaya's Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 5000 Series to reduce power consumption.

  • Avaya Energy Saver can reduce power consumption of Ethernet switches—especially during off-peak periods—by 30-40%
  • Avaya supports businesses in saving electricity through energy-efficient products, including network equipment and IP telephones

TOKYO, JAPAN — Avaya today announced that the International University of Kagoshima has deployed the Avaya Energy Saver feature on Avaya's Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 5000 Series to reduce power consumption.

Avaya Energy Saver can automatically shut down Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) devices such as IP phones and Wi-Fi access points when they are not in use. It also dials back—or dims—Ethernet port speed during off-peak hours, so that non-PoE devices maintain connectivity and service while using less energy. In combination, this allows customers to reduce overall power consumption and energy costs by up to 30-40%. Avaya Energy Saver delivers flexible configuration options for connected devices—inpidual settings for each port allow the University to save energy while also enabling 24x7 access for essential devices, so that students and faculty are never affected.

The International University of Kagoshima deployed an Avaya ERS 8600 switch in the core and Avaya ERS 5000 switches at the edge in 2006, as part of a network connecting 2,000 PCs used in classrooms, campus services, research labs, and libraries. As an increasing number of students use video or voice over the network, the university has traditionally worked hard to reduce power consumption and that drive was accelerated by the need to save more electricity after the East Japan Earthquake. The Avaya Energy Saver is a key component in helping to reduce those power needs.

Companies can deploy Avaya Energy Saver by simply updating the software on their existing Avaya Ethernet switches. The International University of Kagoshima wanted a networking solution that would provide it with network availability for at least a decade. It chose to deploy Avaya's Ethernet switches due to their best-in-class resiliency and their ability to add new functions through software without adding hardware.

Energy saving continues to be one of the major business concerns in Japan. Avaya networking solutions and IP phones are designed to ensure that performance and energy efficiency can be achieved in the same solution, delivering savings to both the environment and to a company’s bottom line, without sacrificing user performance.
