Jolimont Group chooses Avaya for a modern network infrastructure

  • New end-to-end managed infrastructure using Avaya’s Fabric Connect networking technology

Brussels, Belgium – November 12, 2014 – As part of its overall strategy aimed at making IT a continuous improvement driver for the reception and care of patients, healthcare provider Jolimont Group has selected Avaya technology to upgrade its network infrastructure. This approach is designed to interconnect Jolimont Group’s various hospitals, meet the medical staff's expectations in terms of automation and mobility, facilitate communication between the hospital and the outside world, and improve the comfort of patients.

"We wanted a solution that would provide us with end-to-end control over our network and the ability to add new features without having to increase our staff. The benefits of the Short Path Bridging (SPB) technology—built into Fabric Connect smart switches—saved us valuable time when configuring multiple access points," said Fabien Querriau, information system architect at Jolimont Group.

Migrating to a higher performance network has resulted in tangible benefits for both patients and nursing staff. "We offer our patients a number of unprecedented services such as the ability for in- or out-patients to use the internet through a WiFi connection inside the hospital. The new infrastructure also makes our staff's work easier as they can now access patient records from various types of mobile devices and exchange information remotely through the internet. We also meet the medical staff’s expectations in terms of automation (e.g. automated drug order), all this without ever compromising on security. A built-in software 'identity engine' instantly detects who is logging in from which device and will drastically reduce access rights as appropriate," added Fabien Querriau.

SPB technology is a key differentiator for Avaya. The new standard reduces the time-to-service by 90% compared to traditional connectivity solutions. "We are delighted to have been able to demonstrate the full potential of Avaya technology through this large-scale project," said Alex Bosmans, Area Lead for Benelux at Avaya.

Interconnecting Jolimont Group's various hospitals
The network upgrade project started in 2012, with deployment in early 2013. Prodata installed a full network infrastructure based on Avaya's Fabric Connect technology in order to interconnect the Group's various hospitals and data center, thus allowing many end-to-end virtual networks between applications and end-users to be implemented without affecting the core network configuration. Since then, about 100 Avaya switches have been added, along with nearly 600 WiFi access points and a central network management and control solution.

Driven by an upgrade of IT infrastructure and the new challenges posed by the computerization of the healthcare system1, in 2012, Jolimont Group ordered a complete audit of its network infrastructure and launched a call for tenders. The contract was won by Prodata, a service integrator implementing Avaya solutions.

The implementation of the new network infrastructure was concurrent with the commissioning of a new data center at Jolimont Group. "Following the completion of this project within time and budget forecasts, we have been able to increase our interconnection capacity with our new data center by more than one hundred times," concluded Fabien Querriau.

Centres Hospitaliers Jolimont is a leading Belgian healthcare provider with 942 beds in four hospitals (including Jolimont, Lobbes, Nivelles, and Tubize), and 589 beds in rest homes and nursing homes. The non-profit organization also manages 37 assisted living flats as well as 130 day-nursery places.
