Japan’s Chiba University Hospital Supports Critical Hospital Information System with Avaya Fabric Network

Tokyo - Avaya today announced that Chiba University Hospital has deployed Avaya Fabric Connect network virtualization technology in its hospital information system to support high availability, network management flexibility and round-the-clock operation.


Chiba University Hospital established one of the first hospital information systems in Japan in 1978. The volume of data it has collected since then rivals any healthcare establishment around the globe. To support its seamless 24/7 operation the hospital needed a highly available, error-proof network environment that would also provide flexibility and the ability to support network configuration changes rapidly.


Chiba University Hospital wanted to ensure its solution would address a number of areas. In a virtualized environment, the potential impact of an issue in one part of the network might ripple through to other areas, unconstrained by physical network separation. The hospital was also undergoing redevelopment, and needed many network changes to be accommodated without impacting network availability on other parts of the hospital. The previous network design had also emphasized fault tolerance, so the network configuration and design had become complex, making it harder to identify and treat the root cause of an issue. Furthermore it had not delivered the expected load balancing.


Avaya Fabric Connect is able to re-route communications instantly in the event of a failure, which preserves network infrastructure reliability and supports improvements in business continuity. In addition, unlike in the past when complex protocols were needed, simple network configurations can be designed using only the IS-IS protocol, minimizing the causes of network failures. In the hospital’s deployment of Avaya Fabric Connect, even if two core switches were to fail, there would be no impact on the overall network.


With Avaya Fabric Connect, configuration of switches can happen just at the edge of the network, rendering changes to core switch settings unnecessary. This means network changes are simpler, faster and less prone to human error. This is turn increases the hospital’s ability to flexibly and quickly deploy and support new applications. And Fabric Connect also addresses Chiba University Hospital’s concern around limiting the scope of any single network impact. For example, even in the event that power transmission is cut due to construction work on the power source for network equipment, it is now possible to shut down the network only in the building that requires construction.
